Robertson, has just perfected on instrument for preventing marine engines from rac)>>K. An instrument of this kind lias been engaging the attention of the best engineers in tha world, and up to the present nothing has been successful. Mr. iloberfsoii's instrument has been before several well-known engineers in New Zealand, and they deela.r.2 that, it will prove one of the (.'rentes!, of benefits to marine engines, saving the wear and tear on the engines, the breaking of shafts, and losing of propellers which occur in heavy seaways. 'J'hs principle of the machine is to replace the lost resistance which .the blades of the propeller have whilst immersed in the wutof. but which they lose as soon as the blades come out. Tn heavy weather the engineers have to put a man on the throttle valve and shut off steam as soon ns the blades arc coming out, so as to save the raking of his engines. Th 3 whole ship vibrates, and heavy strains are brought on all the machinery. With the instrument attached, all this is completely eliminated, and the engine always runs at its ordinary revolutions 'at all times in all conditions of w?athor, the full power of the engine boinß available, a thing np to the present considered impossible. The machine is purely automatic in its action, and yet very simple in its construction. The great feature of th? working of the instrument is the fact that steo.m to the engine is never shut off whilst the engine is working, and yet it i≤ impossible for the engine to exceed its set number of revolutions. A very successful trial was made on the steamer Wairoa. at Auckland, during a storm, the engine being run up to its limit without the slightest acceleration in the 'engines and without vibration of the beat. KIIRKDALF, FROM NEW YORK. The steamer Kirkdale, of the Kirkdalc Steamship Company, of Glasgow, and at present under charter to the American and Australian Line, arrived at Wellington from New York, via Auckland, last evening, and berthed at tho King's Wharf to discharge 1000 tons of cargo. It is expected to dispatch licr for Lyttelton and Duuedin either to-morrow or Thursday. ATHEXIC'S PASSENGBHS.
