SUPREME COURT. Napier, March 8. At tho Supreme Court Alfred Robert Ronaldson, charged with theft of .£23, Clio moneys of tho Huwke's Boy Rugby Union, and a cheque for £3, (ho property of tho Napier Corporotion, wns acquitted. Kauru Martin, a .Maori youth, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of theft from a dwelling, and against whom were twenty-two previous convictions, was sentenced <o twelve months' imprisonment, and declared an habitual criminal. Matthew Lynam, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing from a dwelling, was admitted to probation for two years. Whatutarowha Paikea, who pleaded guilty to two attempts at arson at To Auto, was admitted to probation for two years, on condition that he went on a farm approved of by tho Probation Officer. Frederick Allan Potter was sentenced to ono year's reformative treatment at Invercargill Gaol for theft from ft dwelling. Grant Westoby, convicted of perjury, was eontonced to two years' imprisonment. Neil Campbell, convicted of common assault on. a Maori, was sentenced to twelve months' reformative treatment in Invcrcargill Gaol. GIFT TO A BATTLESHIP. Tlmaru, March 8. The committee which arranged tho gift from tho Dominion to tho battleship Now Zealand (Bell Shield, gunnery registry, and prize fund) met this afternoon to consider a letter from the Admiralty inquiring whether, as the name of tho ship which received tho gifts hud boon changed to Zealand, and a new ship given by tho Dominion was named Now Zealand, tho gifts should •bo transferred to tho latter. Tho committee decided to reply that they desired tho transfer to bo made, but not until tho expiry of the present commission of tho Zcalandia. UNLAWFUL TRAWLING. Auckland, Maroh 8. In the Police Court to-day, John Brown, mooter, and Henry Tate, part owner, of tho steam trawler Loto, were chargod with trawling within that portion of tho Hauraki Gulf wherein trawl fishing is prohabited. Broivn was fined and costs .£3 18s., and Tato was convicted and ordered. to pay £1 Bs. costs. THE WEATHER. Tlmaru, Maroh 8. Tho rain cleared off early this morning, .and the farmers hopo for a" dry spell. Nearly two inches fell. TIMARU MAYORALTY. Timaru, March 8. Mr. J. Craigie definitely declinos renomination to the Mayoralty. Probably there will bo several candidates. PARALYTIC SEIZURE. Nelson, March 8. Miss Dora Huffam, schoolmistress _ at Pakawau, was found in an unconscious condition this morning, and succumbed later, tho cause being paralytic seizure. GILDED FARTHING. Auckland, Maroh 8., In the Polloo Court Horny Watson and Goorge Croul won committed for trial .for having passed a gilded farthing to a 'cabman for half a sovereign in paying their fare, and receiving eight shillings change. PAHIATUA HOTELS. ' Woodvllle, March 8. The Pahiatua Licensing Committeo, met. to-day. All reports on tho hotels were very "satisfactory. The following permanent transfers were granted Post Office Hotel, Pahiatua, from Watts to Michael Fitzgerald; Club Hotel, Pahiatua, from Mnngussm to Robert A. Grant. The trouble over the Wimbleton Hotel was adjourned till March 21. STOLEN MONEY FOUND, ■ Napier, March 8. There was' an extraordinary sequel today to :lie robbery from the corporation strong-room in September last of between £500 nud £600. Some time ago a small parcel of the stolen sum was found hidden awav amongst old records in the strongroom, and this morning two workmen discovered the remainder vented under tho corporation office amongst somo lumber. FINED £50 AND COSTS. ' Ashburton, March 8. Tho hoiring of tho charges against Thomas Henry Alexander and Annio Alexander, his wife, who vgere alleged to have kept liquor for sale, also to have sold liquor in the No-License district of Ashburton, was resumed to-day, before Mr. V. G. Day, S.M. James Moody, a now witness, gave evidonco that on the morning of February 25 ho visited Alcxander's house and purchased a bottle of whisky. Tho charges against Mrs. Alex-, ander were dismissed, but Alexander was fined £50 and costs on the charge of selling liquor. IDENTIFIED AT LAST. Westport, March 8. Tho unknown man killed by a tramca* in Willis Street, Wellington, on February °9, has been almost definitely identified as Henry Galvin, who passed through Westport from Greymouth on February 27 bv tho Arahura for Wellington, bound for Wanganui races. Ho should have had; about £50 in his possession. J Lis photo has been identified by half-a-dozen people. Galvin was a labourer, a singlo man, with friends at Raglan. Ho had worked in various parts of tho West Coast for sixteen years. CIVIL SERVICE CORPS. Auckland, March 8. It is understood a protest will bo mndo to headquarters on tho subject. INCOME TAX APPEAL. Dunodin, March S. Mr Justico Williams gave judgment! in tho ease of Dalgety and others (appellants) v. the Commissioner of Taxes, an appeal from tho.decision of tho mngis. trato over-rliling objections to an assessment of income for income tax purposes. Tho question was, What woro.tho profits derived by appellants from tho holding or occupation of Crown lands for. tho year ending March 31, 1910, which was the last year appellants carried on, and during which they held a clearing sale? Tho Judge held that the exception contained in tho sub-section could not be construed as an exception to prohibition from deduction. Tho appeal was dismissed, with costs (£10). DEFENCE FINES. . Ghristchurch, March 8. Fines .were.imposed this morning on another batch of youths charged with failure to. obey the Defence Act. Giving reserved judgment in cases in which conscientious and religions objections were raised, Mr. Bailey, S.M., said the question of religion did not ariso fill the men ' wero put to service. It was tho duty of l evervone to register and take the oath, but'the Defence authorities would con- ? sider religious objections later. Fines ; wero imposed.
