AMUNDSEN RETICENT.

HIS CAMP.' HIS PLANS FOE THE FUTURE, Hobart, March 8. Captain Amundsen is still reticent. Ho has stated, however, that when he left Buenos Ayres he went straight south to the ice, where, on January 13 of last year, he met Captain Scott's vessel Terra Nova in the Bay of "\Vliales. He made his base camp on the great ice barrier, in longitudo 16-4deg. west, and latitude 78dog. south, where ho remained with nine men while the Fram returned to Buenos Ayres. Of the work of the camp, Captain Amundsen resolutely refused to speak, and ,when the Pole was mentioned became dumb. He declined oven to say on what date ho left camp for Hobart, though ho remarked that the expedition enjoyed good weather. Apparently Captain Amundsen had not neturned to the Fram on January IG, when Captain Nielsen met the Japanese expedition, which had reached the ico barrier. Captain Amundsen said he did not see the Japanese, and knew nothing regarding their position or plans. , Askedas,to his,own future plans, he flays he intends to stay'a few days in Hobart, and then go to Buenos Ayres. Thence ho will sail around the Horn to San Francisco, and . up through ~ Behring Straits. He will try to follow his'original plan of drifting across the Arctic with the ice, coming out between Greenland and Spitzbergen. Captain Amundsen was the only member of tho expedition who landed here. , Press representatives visited tho Pram, but wore not allowed to board her or (o engage in conversation with the crew. Captain Amundsen regrets that he is unable to give information in view of the kindness received, but says his engagement had made it utterly impossible for him to do so. As soon as ho can ho will show his charts and give the fullest information. He took 103 Greenland sledge dogs, and brought back only 39. Sydney, March 8. The Norwegian Consul has received no information from Captain Amundsen, and expeots none. Chriitiania, March 7. • King Haakon of Norway has not received' Captain Amundsen's report yet. London, March 7. Tho evening newspapers are displaying a 'Wellington telegram stating that Captain Amundsen reports that Captain Scott reached the Pole. Mr 3. Scott and tho Royal Geographical Society have not received confirmatory messages.

STATEMENT BY MR, KINSEY.

TEREA NOVA NOT EXPECTED YET. Oj Tulerrasi.—Tron Ais«eln.t!«n.l Christchurch, March 7. Mr. Kinsey, representative of Captain Scott's expedition, says he does not expect the- Terra Nova back in the immediate future. If conditions are favourable lor the work, the vessel may carry out exploring and scientific work until the. end of April.- The original programme has probably been varied; a great deal depended on Captain Scott's success or otherwise in his Pole expedition. Mr. Kinsey is therefore unablo to indicate at all exactly the date of the expedition's return, but thinks it unlikely that the Terra Nova will be back for some weeks yet.
