MAkARA COUNTY. COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Makara - Council was held yesterday. The following were present:—Councillors Haggerty' (chairman), Taylor, Eastwood, Monaghan, Moore, and Monk. •'. • It was'decided to adopt the report of Mr. R. S. Rounthwaite in regard to the Ngahauranga. Gorge Road.. This report referred to the diversion of a stream and the support of roadway at the bend above the abattoir manager's house. The consulting engineer thought that the cost of cutting throngh: the stream and -building; of the wall would not exceed about ,£9O, as against tho cost of tho tunnel (.£180). Mr. Rounthwaite further reported that he had conferred with the City Engineer (Mr.- W. H. Morton), and lrith his assistant, and no objection would be offered to thn proposal. The land is the property of the Wellington City Council. The work is to be commenced at once. The council decided to wait on tho Finance Committee of the City Council, and ask assistance in carrying out the scheme for making a tunnel below the abattoirs in the Ngalwuranga Gorge, as submitted by the engineer. In the case of travelling stock, especially through the.gorge, it was decided, on tho motion of Councillor Moore, that there be a man at the head of the stock as well as at the rear. Councillor Moore also moved that tho residents be warned against depositing rubbish in and about the Gorge Road and the stream. The motion was adopted. ' It was decided that the cartoso for horse and dray bo 13s. per day for all timo upon tlio roads. Payments amounting to £204 7s. id. were passed for payment. At Market Drayton recently the Alo Connor of the Ancient Order of the Court Leet visited the several hotols and publichouses in Drayton Manor and tested the ales to see if the fame were fit for all classes of people to drink. Inquiries from tho Connor show that every house had very good alo on tap. ■
