NOTES AND COMMENTS.

IBr Glehcoi.] Mr. George Currie has refused several tempting- oifers for the yearling halfbrother to Bronze, by Soult. Sydney is Mr. Currio's market, and he intends to stick to it. The Koatonui yearlings will bo shipped thorp on' Friday next. They will be at Watts's stables at midday on that day, when stud groom E. M'Grath will be plensed to show them to local sportsmen. When tho Dominion representative visited Koatonui at Christmas time, Our Lady (dam of Bronze) was in Auckland on a visit to imported Marble Arch. She has n filly foal by imported King Hufus. The first batch of foals sired by the last-named sire are very promising, and it is expected that he will have a full list next season, as a number of maree have already been booked. M. Dunn, tho Tasmanian jockey, who visited New Zealand a few years ago, was to have ridden Desire in the Newmarket Handicap, but for being suspended by one of the clubs in Tasmania. Dunn's appeal against his suspension was unsuccessful, and so E. Lewis wns given the mount in the Newmarket and the Burke Handicaps. It is understood that trainer M. T. M'Grath is on his way back to New Zealand from Melbourne in search of moro horses. Tho V.E.C. autumn meeting will bo concluded nt Flemington this afternoon, when tho Champion Stakes, threo miles, will be decided. T. Pritchard will jqurnoy to Napier to ride J. M. Cameron's jumpers on Wednesday and Thursday next. Mr. T. Cameron, tho well-known starter, who recently resigned hie. appointment to the Otaki Maori Kacing Club, has nlso notified tho Masterton nnd Feilding Clnbs that ho will bo unablo to act after their next meetings. Having purchased a new property at Ohnkea, Mr. Cameron finds that he cannot now spare the timo to get away to tho meetings where ho has previously acted as starter. In the telegraphed results of the third day's racing nt tho Dunedin Jockey Club's autumn meeting last month, only ten horses were mentioned ns starting in the big handicap, the name of Coiintermino being erroneously omitted. Countermine, however, started nnd was ridden by C. Emerson. Mr. T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay. sent four yearlings to Sydney by yesterday's steamer. They were a half-brother (by Royal Fusilier) to BohrikolY, a full-brother to Beldame, a full-brother to Kohinoor, and a filly by Royal Fusilior from Rosa Madder. Tho youngsters nr*r« ia ohorge

of Martin Davis. Messrs. Stead Bros, also shipped a yearling to Sydney. The annual meeting of tho Whakatakl Hack Racing Club was held on tho Oast.lopoint Beach in fino weather on Thursday last. Thero was an average attendance of visitors. Thcro wero six events on tho programme, and Piermont, Clytio, and btratlicona each won a double. While being exeroised at Tβ Aroha on Monday last tho gelding Sir Walter foil, and his rider (M. Ryan) received a eovero shaking. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the Nelson meeting close on Monday next. It has been decided to retire Miss Mischief to the stud, and she will probably be mated with Danube next season. A report was in circulation yesterday to the effect that Matlow had changed hands after winning at Dannevirke. Though ho won the Masterton Cup in December, Aberbrothock has not improved in the meanwhile as was expected. The Papakura horse was mado favourite in the Dannevirke Cup in which he made a poor showing. Though looking much improved by the race, he was quite an outsider on the ficcoud day when ho again shaped badly. Miscal (Handsome .Tack—Merope) has been running very consistently of fate, but with no luck.. In tho Dannevirke Cup, in which ho finished third, he was in the rear in the early part of the race, but io put in a great run from the six furlongs post, and was in a winning position at tho bottom of the straight. He tired, however, in the run home. On tho second day ho ran much tho same race, but was comfortably beaten by Golden Loop who had a bad run in the Cup. W. Young did not, after all, sustain a iroken collarbone when Eiya fell with him at Woodville. Later examination showed that the injury was nothing more than a badly bruised shoulder. It is stated that tho Feilding horseman will forgo riding over fences in future and that his usual mounts will be taken by his younger brother Wallace. Miss Ancusta, winner of the Trial Stakes at Dannevirko, is only a pony, but she is a decidedly smart beginner, and, with a little racing:, will be very useful over a short course. In each of her races at Dannevirke she got well awaj-, and quickly raced to tho front. After a long series of defeats Golden Loop has at last managed to win a good stake. Tho chestnut gelding has been showing tip well in all his races lately, but has met with a lot of ill-fortune. In the Dannevirke Cup he was last-to leave the mark, nnd gavo the field a big start. Die effort.to catch them was too much, and, after leading into the straight, he , tired away to nothing. In tho Autumn , Handicap Emerson got him well nway, and, being well placed throughout, he ran ■ in a comfortable winner from Miscal and : Coromnndel. His victory wns anticipated -, by his connections, who are reported to ' have had a good win. j FIXTURES. i March 13 and U—Napier Park R.C. Autumn. March 18—Opunake R.C. Annual.
