HOME NOTES AND FOREIGN, [Br ifiiJtsniET.] To-dny.—P.N.Y.C. Handicap Races for first and second-class yachts, over No. '1 course. Saturday, Mareli IC—P.N.Y.C. picnio. Cruising Club Handicap Race. Saturday, March 23.—P.N.Y.C. Handicap Eaces for first and second-class yachts. Saturday, March 30.—P.N.Y.C. Handicap Races for first and sccond-olass yachts. Eastor.—Cruising Club's Kaco to South. Island. The Northcote Cup, Tho races for tho Northcote Cup took placo at Melbourne on February 8 and 10. Mr. J. Dixon's Killara, tho Victorian defender on behalf of the St. Kilda Yacht Club, was again successful in defeating Messrs. Albert and Saver's I?a----ivhiti 11, tho New South Wales representative, challenging through the Royal Princo Alfred Yacht Club, in the first two heats of the contest ,for tho cup. A third heat »tos thus unnecessary, and tho cup will remain in Victoria for another twelve months. It is pleasant to note, states the "Australasian," in view of tho disagreement* and discussions that havo occurred in connection with previous inter-Stato races, that the contest has been fought out in tho most sportsmanlike manner, and with the best of good feeling on both sides. Tho courses each day, although somewhat different, were of a total distance of about twelvo miles each. A strong broezo from the south-east prevailed on the first day, whioh. brought up a lumpy 6ea. Tho Killara won the first race with a few minutes to Bpare. With one raco to tho good and a light southerly and a smooth eea, tho supporters of tho Victorian defender were feeling very confident when tho two little six-motro boats started to fight out the second heat of the contest. Tho Killara held the lead in this race right from the start, and finished, after a very exciting race, a minute and a few seconds ahead of her rival. Tho races were witnessed with keen interest by the largo crowds present, and the crows of both yachts were heartily cheered ae they passed the St. Kilda pier. As to the meriti of' the two boats, it has all along been agreed that in light weather Killara would undoubtedly bo the faster, whilst there was also a more or less universal opinion that Eawhiti II would bo equally successful in heavy. The result, however, has shown that Killara, suitably rigged, can etand well up to her canvas, and on a thrash to windward, with a nasty head jump, can get through, or rather over, the seas with romarkablo facility. A Few Home Notes, It will bo of interest to Wellington yachtsmen to know that the smart firstclass yacht loranei, lute of Wellington, and now of Dnncdin, has been purchased by an Auckland owner. The vessel, which was built 6omo years ago by Messrs. Ijogan Bros., of Auckland, to the order of Mr. Turnbull, of Wellington, has, during her career, won a good number of races: The lorangi ie to leave Dunedin for Auckland next Christmas. The Port Nicholson Yacht Club's ocean race to Port Underwood and back, which was to have been held last Saturday, had to bo postponed, as the weather conditions were not euitable. Tho event will probably be decided at a later date, but so far nothing definite has been arranged. To-day the- P.N.Y.C. will decido races for first and oecond-class yachts over No, 1 course. On Saturday last the latest addition to Wellington's fleet of launches woe floatod. Tho little vessel, which has been built by Mr. E. Bailey, to tho order of the crow of tho Evans Bay packet, Dauntless, is a fine tea boat, and the anticipated results will no doubt be forthcoming. ■...■", .
