ROWING.
(By "Mercary.") SUBJECTS HERE AND ABROAD. Easter Saturday—Napier Regatta. Star Club Notes. Pending the Napier Regatta, nt Easter time, club matters havo quietened down again. In all probability all three of our local clubs will ba strongly represented, and already the Star Boating Club Committee has imulo an alteration in anticipation in (ho maiden crow, T. Bedford going in iis stroke in place of Newbold. A change is bring contemplated in (he junior crew also, so ns to enablo the men in tlie-so two crews to engage in every race on the programme except one—the maiden sculls. Tho maidens have had several rows behind Bedford, and tho change promises to be beneficial. The juniors are resting a while—and need it, as (hero is littlo doubt that their training zeal has led I hem into ft Ira]) of st.ilDiioss—tlic stroke and No. II especially so. Out Looking for Barry. Says "Riggor" in the Sydney "Daily Telegraph" :— Did; Arnst is making preparation for his forthcoming journey to England to row Harry. It. is understood that lie is adhering to bis original arrangement of leaving nest month, and is preparing accordingly. the full amount of tho champion's stake, and even offered the full amount, but since then it is believed that one or two other of Arnsfs supporters have come in, and now- tho risk is shared. This is as it should be. Good a snort as a man may be, niul however willing lie is to put up the money, it is too much to ask pt one man. Such an action as this is i>! deep contrast to the general conditions oMninr.iff in England, where, it has been stated, Harry has had great difficulty on more than one occasion in raising the rerpiivpil sum. This is certainly a happy position for the Australian athletes, but it would be a groat doul belter if there were more men of tho same calibre and iinnneial soundness nliout, r>o Hint the mailer of support might be more evenly distribute , .!. In this instance there can bo no doubt that a considerable amount of risk will bo run by Arnst's supporters. Hitherto they havo had, pradically fipenkuig, certainties, in. that Arnst has always been in a position lo entertain little doubt about, the result of the race, but now it is totally different. He is going to a strange country and a fitrnngo course; not that this would make any difference if his opponent was new to the conditions under which they were to row, bul; he is not, and that is just whero the trouble comes in. Certainly Arnst's friends find a great deal of comfort and assurance by reason of tho fact that the champion .showed his superiority over Barry on the Zambesi in a most decisive manner; and that Arnst probably is a' faster sculler than the Englishman; but those things will count for nothing on the Thames. The Thames and tho Parramatta Rivers will not stand comparison; they are so different, and to get used enough to the former course to enable him to race Barry with confidence Arnst will ha to study it and practise on it the whole of tho time ho is in England. It requires a lot of hard work, and as Barry, as well as Arnst, is noted for his prowess in this direction, there should at least bo a very hard rnco throughout. It should bo the race of Arnsfs life, and if ho wins he will get a great reception when ho returns to Sydney. Arnst has cabled Barry oskinj? him to guarantee his JJSOO expenses, and has nominated Mr. "Jim" Field to act for him in England. Blenheim Man in Sydney. Charles Hegglun, late bow of the champion four of the Blenheim Club, is now in Sydney, and is rowing for the Balmain Club.
