DR. MAWSON'S WORK.

GENERAL EXPLORATION. Tho work which Dr. Mnwson's expedition intends to carry out in the Far South is chiefly the exploration of the coastline from Cape Adare westward to Gaussberg— roughly, a distance of 2500 miles. Three parties will be landed at convenient intervals, and these parties will complete the coast survey by extended marches in opposite directions during the following summer. A journey will also be made to tho South Magnetic Pole, in order lo supplement the readings taken by Dr. Mawson during his previous journey to the Magnetic Pole from the south-east. which he made when he was a member of the Shackleton expedition. The vessel is also to engage in deep-sea dredging and oceanographical work generally. For this purpose she carries apparatus which will be used in depths up to 2500 fathoms. Dr. Mawson intends to make a,special feature of magnetic work, and a number of magnetic instruments were tiiken for Ihe use of the explorers. To aid the shore parlies in their movements, sixty Greenland dogs are being employed.'
