LIEUT. riLCHNER'S KOUTE. Lieutenant Filchner's plan is to strike into the Weddell Sea, and attack' the Antarctic from tho side opposite to that being explored by Captain Scott. The expedition is timed to. arrive at the ice in November, so as to take advantage of tlie most favourable ice conditions for forcing a way into the Weddell Sea. The ship will follow tho outline of Coats Land, ami establish as far south as possiblo the base of the expedition, where eleven men will be landed, mid a scientific station will be erected. Hero geographical, geological, astronomical, magnetic, meteorological, and biological work will be carried out' for at least a year. From here four members ot the party with Nansen sledges will make a dash for the south. Tho ship meantime wjU work its way along .the coast, carrying a party to explore; tho coast. , The expenses of the expedition are estimated at .£70,000. The expedition is very completely equipped. Its ship, the Deutschland, is a converted whaler, with auxiliary steam of about 300 horse-power. She carries a wireless telegraphy installation. .
