RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.
STATEMENT FOR LAST YEAH. A statement in reference to the operation of tlio Rhodes. Scholarship scheme during the past year has been prepared by the Rhodes Trust, London. The stateinent shows, that the. number of Rhodes scholars in residence at Oxford in the course of the academic year 1010-11 was 17(i, of whom 7" were, from (ho colonies of the Empire. Sll from the l.'nited States, and 10 from Germany. 'There were also in residence eight, ex-scholars (seven colonial and one American) engaged either in teaching or in reading for examinations. Three ex-scholars held fellowships in Oxford colleges, two of whom were also tutors of their colleges. One scholar had leave of absence for purposes of study, one went out of residence before the end of tho academic year, and one resigned his scholarship at the end of his second year. At the end of tho summer term, 1911, 6!) completed the period of their scholarships. At tho beginning of the October term, 1911, 71 newly-elected scholars entered into resilience; one American scholar elect obtained a year's leave of absence on account of ill-health; and one Australian scholar two years' lcavo for the purpose of joining the Antarctic expedition of Dr. itawson. 'The scholars were distributed among the colleges as follow:—Exoter, 17; St. John's, J.'); Uniliol, Christ Church, Lincoln. Merlon, and Queen's. 12 each; .Now College and Oriel, 11 each; Hertford, 10; Trinity, riiivet-.it}-. Wnilliani, and Worcester, !l each; Pembroke. 7; Hrnsonoso, 4; .losus, :i; Magdalen, 2; Corpus Christi and Kcble, 1 each. The distribution of tho scholars depends partly upon their own choice and partly on their merits as judged by (he college authorities. Each selected scholar sends in to tho Trust, a list of colleges at. which ho wishes to enter in tho order of his preference. The authorities of each college then select from'the-applicant's for admission those whose scholastic record and credentials seem to them most satisfactory. The number-admitted to any one college is strictlv limited.
