During the hearing of tho charges ogainst Coilut Gishcrt WolfE-Mottornich and another of complicity in the swindling by a gang of international card-sharpers, Wolff-Mettcrnich accused Lieutenant Backhaus, who laid the information against him, from whom ho alleges he won ,£350 in London, of espionage in England under the direction of tho German military authorities. Backhaus, he .snid, sent reports regularly to the German Government. ..,..:. . .. Lieuteniml Bhckhaus testified that ho' had been sent to London party on n.ilitary and partly on private business. WHAT LIEUT,' BACKHAUS SAW. (Ree. March 0,11.15 p.m.) Berlin, March 6. Lieut. Backhous denied that he acted as a spy in England, or went' there on any oflicinl mission. He visited Aldershot, where he was received as a German officer, and shown things which ordinarily no one is allowed to see.
