PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
A LAWLESS SCENE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, March 6. An incident occurred early yesterday afternoon which has caused a good d«al of talk in town. As the result of a dispute, alleged to have arisen out of a sporting transaction, two men—one a citizen and the other a private detective —adjourned from a billiard saloon to the .Fitzherbert bank of.the Manawatu River, and there fought for a stake of ,£lO. Seconds v.-«ro appointed, and there was a small crowd of spectators. Tho encounter, however, was indecisive, as far as the rules of boxing arc concerned, and it was declared a draw, no monev beinj lorfeited. Mr. S. E. Lancaster and Mr. W. T. Penny (secretary of the Manawatu A. and P. Association) left Palmerston yesterday for the Waikato Show at Hamilton, whero a conference of northern A. and P. Associations is to ba held in connection with arranging trains for shows between Palmerston and the north. Tho idea is to encourage the establishment of .stock from both ends of the North Island. At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening .Mr. Black, electrical engiueer, who recently gave a report on electric trams for l'almer&ton, wrote in connection with the proposal to add an additional rout?, and also wrote in respect of tho site of the power hou-e. Summed up, Mr. Ulack's further proposals mean putting another .L' 3001) on to the proposed' loan of .£60,000, making the total .£72,000. Councillor Nathan has given notice of motion that the resolution to place the loan of .£69,000 before tho ratepayers be rescinded. As tho result of a picture matinee entertainment here a sum of i 29 6s. 4d. was raised in aid of the proposed children's, ward- at tho Palmerston Hospital, which is being especially promoted by Mr. I. ,T. Nathan. The Government subsidy will raise the amount to .£64 10s. Councillor Haydon has been appointed to represent the Palmerston Borough Council at tho annual conference of the Libraries' Association, Councillor Havflon being chairman of the Library Committee .here. Mr. L. A. Abraham, of Palmerston, is to judge the seeds, etc., at the Hawke's iiny autumn show. A number of Territorials in Palmerston are to bo prosecuted for ■ not attending parades.
