The following circular lias bren sent out to various tradespeople in Gisborno by tho liisboine Chamber of Commerce: "'l'o whom it may concern.—Dear Sir, Direct shipments, London to tlisborne, — As you are no doubt aware, the Uisborue Clumber of Commerce recently communicated with the Xew Zealand representatives of the shipping companies trading to this port, viz., Now Zealand Shipping Company, Tyser Line, Ltd., and Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, and supplied information as to the volume of direct shipments f»r the preceding year, making a request that tho lines named should combine and put on a steamer monthly from London to call at this port, thereby saving transhipping charges. The colonial representatives of the companies named seemed favourable to the proposal, and transmitted the request to their London houses with favourable recommendations. Wβ have since, however, heard that the companies named, in conference no doubt, havo turned the proposal down meantime, on tho grounds that tho volunio of tonnage did not warrant their complying with our request. Wo are particularly desirous of not permitting the matter to rest in its present position, and have thought that, the different importers might; give us an estimate of tho probable tonnage they would be prepared to inlluence in (lie manner indicated for tho next, say, three years. In order, therefore, to assist tho object, we have in view, will you kindly comiiiiinicato with the Chamber your views on the matter, and stiltc> the amount of tonnage you would l>t> prepared to indent direct from London if Hie course which we have outlined hero is carried into effect?"
