THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glenjoe.]
Those interested should note that acceptances for the Napier Park meeting close to-night. Nominations for (he Masterton meeting must l>e made by Thursday next. There will be racing at Dnnnevirko tomorrow and Thursday. J. AY. Lowe is leaving for Dannevirkotoday with the two-year-old Obligant, who has an engagement on the second day of the meeting. ■1\ Higgolt is taking four -horses, and YV. Davies, J. Aycrs, and 11, Kingiin one each. At the conclusion of the Wanganui meeting Mon Ami was purchased by Mr. i\ Mai-tin, of Palnierston North, for SfJgns. The Auckland-bred mare has been a great disappointment for a considerable time. She is capable of almost anything on the tracks, but fails to run up to it in her races. Those who witnessed tho running of the, Wanganui Cup stats that had Counterfeit been a starter it is quite likely that Bronze would have defeated her. It is argued that when they met as two-year-olds Bronze- finished in front of tho Cbokoboro mare, while in tho Wanganui Guineas, won by Counterfeit, the Highden mare was admittedly short of work. It will bo interesting to see how Mr. Henrys assesses tho pair in tho Great Autumn Handicap. Mr. Morse gave the pair 9st. 21b. each on the second day at Wanganui,
Gal tee, who showed some form at the West Coast meetings last month, is engaged in the Trial Stakes at Dannevirkc to-morrow.
When Bonnie Boy won on tho second day of the Woodville meeting it was thought that Moahau was unlucky to lose. The half-brother to Armistice put up two good performances at the Wanganui meeting,.and will probably beat tho Waverley-owned gelding whenever they meet.
Desire is the best colt bred in Tasmania for some years. Last month ho won the Hobart Cup, one mile anil a half, for which win lie put tip 71b. penalty in the Newmarket Handicap. Ho was sired by Chiron, a son of ladas (English Derby winner), from Ambition, who belongs to a well-known Tasmanian racing family. Desert Hose, who dead-heated for second place, acted as runner-up to Queen o Scots last year. Tho progeny of Wallace put up an exceptionally good record at Elemingtoii on Saturdav. Wilari (Wallace-Murna) demonstrated that her Derby win was no chance affair bv winning-the St. Legcr. Trafalgar, the most popular horse racing in the Commonwealth, downed Comedy King in tho Essendon Stakes. The imported hnr.-o must have cost Green a ton of monev since he won tho Melbourne Cup. The winner of the Sires' Produce Stakes (Sheriff Muir) put down a good field, including tho well-performed \Volowa, winner of a double- at Cnulfield recently. Sheriff Muir is from tho Now Zealand-bred Miss Delavnl—a good winner in tho colours of D. M'Leocl, who was formerly a well-known peucillcr in Auckland. Bonnie Boy, Lady Moutoa, and Ineuru, winners at woro also successful at Wanganui. There is a good chance of tho Highden si able putting up a fight with Sir Geo. Clifford on tho list of winning owners for tho present term. Tho North Island owner got a good lead at Wanganui. where tho figures were-.-"Mr. Jlighdcn, ,£1000; Sir Goo. Clifford, .£25. Two of the progeny of St. Paul, who never competed in a hurdle race, were first, and second in flio Okoia Hack Hurdle race at Wanganui on Saturday. Ono of St. Paul's best performances was put up in the Wanganui Stakes at the Jubilee meeting. Fashion Plate and Bonnie Boy aro the only winners at Wanganui that aro engaged at Danncvirke. . Both horses are acceptors for tho Tahoraito Welter, seven furlongs. Tho company which Mcrrivonia is pitted against at Dannevirkc is not nearly so select' as that which she met at Wanganui, and she may therefore be expected to run forward. Meremero (a winner at Woodvilie) does not do so well with a light-weight boy on her back as in a welter, in which a strong rider is ayaiN able. In the Tahoraito Welter, Tripoli has been astal to concede Matlow 71b.— I a hi" task. The latter ran consistently both at Woodvilie mid Wanganui. but without anv luck. Fashion Plato, Memo Lad, and Bonnie Boy are three recent winners which he is conceding weight to. Tonic, who is in the Electric Hack with (he' minimum weight, was placed behind Slvx nt Wanganui. Khamsin is nicely placed in the Tamaki Welter with 71b. abovo the minimum. If tho going is suitable, Avamice mav be expected to run weli in tho Makirikiri Hack, but she generally runs better with a race into her.
