FIRE IN MELBOURNE.
tiREAT BLAZE IN THE CITY Bj Tolcnraoh-Press Association-Got) J risM (Dec. March I, 10.55 p.m.) Melbourne, Starch 4. A serious fire occurred in tho city at Messrs. Driscoo and C'o.'s hardware warehouse, a three-story building erected only six months ngo. The front part was fortunately separated from tho rear, whero the fire started, by fire-proof doors and escaped tho flames, though the immense stock was damaged by water. The firemen made a splendid effort to save the building, which was tho centre of a packed mass of buildings. Tho fire was got under in three hours. Burning debris was carried to tho adjoining buildings and started a fire in the Bank of New South Wales, which was soon subdued. Other buildings, including Messrs. Montgomery's cork warehouse and a number of smaller business premises, suffered from heat and water. The collapse of Messrs. Briscoe's wall damaged the Bank of New South Wales. Messrs. Briscoe's business will not be seriously inconvenienced aa thoy havo another large store at West Melbourne. One estimate puts the damage at .£40,000.
