Herries, SI.P., left for Auckland yesterday. Mr. W. Nosworthy, SI.P. for Ashburton, left for the south last night, accompanied by Sirs. Nosworthy. Srr. D. H. Guthrie, SI.P. for Oroua, and junior Opposition Whip, was engaged yesterday in interviewing Ministers and' Departmental heads in tho interests of his constituency. He leaves for Feildiug to-day. Major Shepherd, Parliamentary Ser-geant-at-Arms, left yesterday by the Slain Trunk express for his home at Papakura. Sir. W. D. S. Slacdonald, junior Government Whip, and M.P. for the Bay of Plenty, leaves Wellington this morning for Gisborne, where ho is due to arrive tomorrow morning. Slessrs, H. Spencer Jones and J. J. Rouse, visitors from tho Old Country, who havo been staying at the Royal Oak Hotel, left on a tour of the North Island yesterday. Sir. Donald Sl'Lean, the well-known Wellington contractor, aocompanied by Sirs, and the Misses (2) Sl'Lean, loavo for Sydney en route to England on Friday next. The Rev. H. C. Coote. rector of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, and Sirs. Coote, who have l>een louring the North Island, leave for Home via. Sydney by the Maunganui on Friday next. • The Rev. Father Toomey, parish priest at Ellerslie, will loavo Auckland on April 17 on a 12 months' holiday, during which time he will visit Ireland and the Continent. On Thursday last he was the recipient of a handsome address and a purse of sovereigns from his parishioners' at Panmure. Sir. J. A. Young, M.P., has decided, owing to his increased public duties, not to seek re-election to tho Waikato Licensing Committee, of which he has been .a member continuously sinco 1900. All the Slinisters are in town except the Hon. A. T. Ngata, who is at Port Awanui. Sir. J. Sl'Bain, of the Town Clerk's staff, is at present on sick leave, having sustained nn injury to his knee. The Nelson Diocesan Synod passed the following resolution:—"The Synod of the Diocese of Nelson desires to place on record its high appreciation of tho noble and self-denying services rendered by the Right Rev. C. 0. Stules, D.D., in the office of Bishop of tho Diocese for a period of over twenty years, and prior to that for a quarter of a century's more restricted labours as Vicar of Brightwater and Archdeacon of tho Waimeas. The Bishop has ever devoted himself faithfully and conscientiously to the duties entrusted him and to the full extent of a conspicuous ability. He has proved himself a truo Father-in-God to all sections of the community. He has been foremost iiv endeavouring t° inculcate, both in'precept and practice, spiritual unity with people of other denominations. The Synod desires to recognise the Bishop's unselfish efforts _ in the cause of education, both religious and secular, and especially the excellent work lie did for many years as honorary secretary to the Board of Theological Studies, New Zealand. In addition to the spiritual oversight of the diocese, the Bishop has devoted a considerable portion of his time to tho work of foreign missions. In conclusion, the Synod desires to express to his Lordship, and to Sirs. Slules and family, its general sense of indebtedness for their unselfish labours, and to pray that they may all bo . spared for many years to livo in sym- ; pathetic union with tho diocese, with which tho Bishop has been so long offi- '. daily connected, Tho Chapman-Alexander party of, • Evangelists is to consist of Dr. and Mrs. \ i J. Tho mission opens f this week in Dunedin. ' A pleasant gathering took place at the I rooms of tho Marino Engineers' Institute yesterday morning when a presen- " tation was made by the engineers of tho Union Steam Ship Company to Sir. T. B. Wallace as a mark or appro--3 ciation and esteem on his retirement ■ from the company's service to tako up „ the appointment of secretary to tho institute. Sir. J. Cable (president of tho Institute) was in tho chair. Sir. R. Paterson (local superintendent engineer '• of the Union Company) on behalf of en- \ gineers, made the presentation, which \ consisted of a heavy gold nlbert and ai J handsome marble dock, suitably in-J scribed, and in a very pleasant speech referred to Sir. Wallaces long service J with the company and how ho had gain- .' ed the esteem of his fellow engineers, • and also that of his employers by his 1 sterling qualities and abilities. Slessrs. 6 Hickey, Wickes, Rankin, Sl'Conville, T Dunwbodic, and Jas. Darling (late presir dent of the Institute and formerly an ■" engineer in- the company) also spoke of ' the high estcoin in which Sir. Wallace 1 was held and wished him, Sirs., and Sliss 8 Wallace long life and prosperity. In a. ■■ very happy and reminiscent speech Sir. e Wallace suitably -replied. The meeting o terminated by toasting the healths of Sir. '■ Wallace, Sir. Paterson and the president, '■ during which 'reference was made to tho n good relations existing between tho e Union Company and their engineers, J Sir. A. C. Cumier has been appointed ■ engineer for the Invercargill Town Council. Sir. Carmer, who is 31 years of age, learned his profession in Wellington, having been apprenticed with Messrs. Cable and Co. He gained two scholarships nt the Wellington Tochnical School, and also ho obtained certificates from tho South Kensington School of Art, London. Later, he entered the service of • the Union Company, and for o tho last two years he has boon an ena gincer in the Christchurch tramway e power house. Sir. W. L. Parker, also a '■- Wellington boy, and now an engineer in >■ tho Dunedin City Converter Station, i- has been appointed assistant to Sir. Cart mer.'
Mr. Walter Nathan, of Messrs. Bannntyno and Co., Ltd., will leave for England on April 26, catching the Orient Company's Orontes at Adelaide. A Press Association message from Melbourne states that Cnuon Sadlier, tho newly-appointed Uishop of Nelson, will delay his departure to Nelson for a, couplo of months. Mr. Alfred Linley, of the firm of West's and Royal Pictures (King's Theatre), is leaving on a trip to Sydney and Melbourne by the Maungamii on Friday next.
A social gathering was held by the emplovees of To Aro' House at Godber's Hall in Courtcnny Place, lo bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Tompsett. Mr. Tonipsett is severing his connection with To Aro House, and is shortly leaving for the Old Country.. Everyone was in a social mood, and the evening passed merrily with songs, music, cards, and games. At 10 o'clock the party sat down to a dainty supper, served by Godber ami Co., the only toast being to the guests. Various members of the staff spoke of Mr. Tonipsott's many good qualities, his efficient, managership, and kindly disposition to nil; and Mr. Tompsett feelingly responded. Later in the evening, Mr. Tompsett was tho recipient, of a handsome gold watch, presented by the employees, and Mrs. Tompsett was presented with a dainty pendant. The presentation was made by the father of the house., Mr. Martin. After songs, etc., the party broke up amid tho straino of "Auid Lang Fyuc."
