NOTES ON THE RACING.
The autumn fixture of the Wanganm Jockey Club concluded on Saturday in a most successful manner. The attendance was very large and the machine handled over .£3(100 more than on Cup Day. The racing was a rich feast and never have finer linishes been witnessed on this course. The Wunganui Stakes, whicn went to Dearest by a head, was generally regarded as the best finish seen on this course for many years, and eclipsed that of two seasons back when Lady Lucy scored from S-andstream and a c ose ypucked field. In. Saturday's race, the favourite was always in a good position, but was lucky to win. On the day and barring accidents! both Undecided aim Midnight Sun should have finished in front of Mr. Buckley's mare. In the Jackson Slakes the Ilighden bracket (Erniengarde and Boanerges) started a hot favourite, but not at such a short" price as was anticipated. To win in record tiiii'e stamps the 2-year-old iiliy to be every bit as good as Trainer Price claimed for her, but while admitting this, what must bo said of the performance of Hoyol Scotch, who only suffered defeat by n head at a difference of I.'ilb. 'f To his intimate friends Trainer T. Quiiuivan was most confident and stated that his horse was certain to break lmin. 14sec. He did this by a good big margin, and even then suffered defeat. Taken altogether it looks very much like "hats oft to Erniengarde." The day's racing commenced with a big dividend as was- the case on Thursday. In a field of twelve horses backers went heavily for Miscal, Plantation, Kauroa, and St. Felix. None of the quartet finished in a place and No. 1 event went all against backers. At the start Sen Queen and Golden Loop carried on the running from a bunched field, but across the "rec." bend' the leaders were caught by I'cd Lupin, who came from a long way back. As they entered the straight Lnily Moutoa appeared on the outside and in a good finish gained the verdict. The Foxtou mare won with a bit in hand as she started from the extreme outside and ran round the whole field.
The Porirua pair. Dirge and Aloha, both of whom an leased by Mr. J. H. Pressor, was the favourite selection of backers in tho hack sprint, but good money went on lioyal Simon (Gray) and Clomops (Oliver). • The appearance of Piriwai in the field was responsible for the start being spoiled. The starter decided to leave her, but failed to notify tho other riders, half of whom noticing tho Taranaki mure was a long way behind, were not ready for the pressing of the button. It was the worst start of the meeting, and some of Uie horses were let , !/half n furlong, while backers of Piriwai (lid not get a run for their money. When .1 furlong had been covered St. Gate and lioyal Simon were well clear of the field. Tho Porirua pair were in the centre, and Clemoes was whipper-in. It looked any odds against the favourite, combination with half the distance gone, hut iu tho nest furlong Aloha made up a lot of ground, and with a distance to go was alongside Eoyal Simon and just behind St. Gate, Lady Volga, and Outward. Jioyal Sinion sot through, on the fence when Lady Volga was tiring, lnit Aloha had to go outside three horses. In a splendid finish Aloha won by a length, witli St. Gate clear of Lady Volga, and then came Upyal Simon and Outward. Parewanui ami llaugiatua were, the withdrawals from the Jackson Stakes, leaving sii runners, but only one dividend. Atlttimmis was voted the best-conditioned colt in the lield, while EnneiiKarde appeared to walk a trifle short. The latter started on the fence, with Boanerges next. Styx and "Urinengarde were the first to single themselves out, but with a couple of furlongs gone the lilly was out by herself, witli Autuniniis just clear of Uoyal Scotch, tlioa came Boanerges and Stepney. With two furlongs to go Styx was still in second place, but ho suddenly retired, and Autuinnus wus in that position as they came into ti line for homo. Here the leiidor was boin;,' hard ridden, nnd a roar from the crowd proclaimed that lioyal Scutch had winning prospect;. " Mr. Watt's colt was certainly puttiug in a phenomenal run and Grav was contributing his mite. He soon settled Autumiiiis, but fniled by » head only to reach Krinengnrde. It. was a splendid contest, and raised the enthusia<m of the crowd. When I ho time was hoi-ted, many were prepared to cavil at it, but several private watches ajjreed with it, mid in one ca-e only did Hid writer find anvone who made it it 'J-filhs worso gallop. " Kemnae and Leobuiler. both of whom had bcpii going very well at li miles mi the first day, wero backed in thai order for the Open Jliinlle race. The latter won, l>ut. Mallow raino vorv fast iii the straight, but missed .second place by n head. liwan was the last to finish. It was pouring with rain when the last event came on, but the public showed no disposition to leave, and hundreds were still seeking shelter in the- grandstand Itsii" after C.'iO p.m. or more than ail hour after the last race. Byron was made u better favourite than Gladiole, with San"uiiniry better backed than Bootle. Unter "vas Iyins all over the course, and this "reatly favoured Bootle, who began in bis usual brilliant style, and was not headed. With Gipsy Belle out form pointed to the winner, who wits allowed to pay quite a false price.
