WANGANUI JOTTINGS.
(By Tclegrapl.— Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, March 2. Very successful and enjoyable reunions wero 'held last evening by the Welsh Society, the old Alexandra Cavalry Association, and tho old members of the formed Wanganui Navals, tho latter of whom decided to form themselves into an association on the lines of a similar socioty in Wellington Tho dispute regarding tho work of protecting- the river bank at Taylorville still drags on. Tho Wanganui and Wanganui East Borough Councils agreed in view of tho urgency of the work to waive previous agreements and to make a start previous t-o the sitting of the Hoyal Commission to allocate the cost. Tho Wanganui County Council, however, refuses to agreo to the work being started till after the commission has considered the matter, and refuses to depart from an agreement to this effect. Nothing therefore remains but to wait for several months. Meantime tho river continues steadily eating into the bank. Several young men will appear before the S.M. next week to answer oharges of a breach of the Defence Act. The- rainfall at Wanganui in February was 5.07 inches, against .56 inches for the same month last year. Rain fell on ten days, though four-fifth 3 of the fall was on three days. Tho vital statistics for February are:— Births 45 (previous February 30), deaths 28 (9), marriages 14 (13). In view of the want of unanimity between the town and country members of the Harbour Board on tho subject of the proposed quarter million loan, and in order to spcure tho agreement of the latter to a modified scheme of works, notice of motion Jias boon given for next meeting to rescind the previous resolution and promote a Bill authorising a loan ofiIOO.OOO allocated us follows :-oCow dredge. .£30,000; dredging 17 foot channel from the heads to the town, ,£t0,700; extension of moles and walls and contingencies, 4152,000.
