PARALYSIS OF INDUSTRY MINERS REFUSE TO LEAVE QUESTION OF RATES OPEN CONFERENCES FAIL
Bj Tclssriph—Preii Ai!oota.tlaa-O<iDjTl«St London, March 1. The coal miners' strike is in full swing. A million workers, including surfacemen, arc idle. Lack of fuel is hampering innumerable industries. Tho blast furnaces at Middlesborough (Yorkshire) and in Scotland are closed. One hundred thousand colliers in Scotland have struck. Pifty steamers are idle at Glasgow owing to lack of coal. Scottish excursion trains to England have been cancelled.. Tho English Railway Companies decline any liability arising from delay of traffic. The Iron Exchange at Birmingham is at a standstill. Most of the ironmasters are closing to-morrow. There is much excitement among the spinners at Lancashire. They have a fortnight's supply of coal. The Admiralty has chartered two six-thousand-ton steamers to fetch American coal for the use of the Navyi Mr. Stanton, the Welsh miners' leader, said: "We are looking forward to a happy time. Wo will soon get our own way. Wo will spend out time in picture shops, stay in bed as long as we like, and generally enjoy ourselves." In the House of Commons, replying to Mr. Keir Hardie, Labour member for Merthyr-Tydvil, Mr. Reginald M'lCenna, Home Secretary, said troops would Iμ ready to bo sent to South Wales if real necessity arose, but the executive of the South Wales Federation was calling on all its members to preserve order.
