FIRE AT NORTHLAND.
USING BENZINE. A two-storeyed, six-roomed house lit Military l?oad, Northland, was totally destroyed bv firo ut ten o'clock yesterday morning. The houso wn.s owned and occupied by Mr. Harold Banks. Tho furniturn and effects were insured for. .£l5O in tho Commercial Union Office. The building was also insured, it is understood, but the amount, of the risk was not ascertainsiblo yesterday. Mr. Banks was using benzino to clean a dress, wlien a spark dropped from his pipo and ignited the benzine oil (Uβ garment, lie at onco tried to extingmsii the iUiino, but in his haste to do so was unlucky enough to upset the bottle Irorn which "lie had boen usin.T tho benzine, and the fire became a lnucli more serious affair than promised at hrst. , ll ° WM fighting the fire when Mrs. Banks came into tho room, and, being frightened and startled bv what she saw, she hunted. She had not been in robust health of late, and Mr. Banks gave all us attention to his wife when she fell, ami ho therefore had to leavo the fire to burn. It spread rapidly, and very soon nil hope of saving tho house vanished. Nona of the contents were saved.
