ANGLICAN CHURCH APPOINTMENTS.

NEW BISHOP OF UGANDA. The Ven. John Jamieson Willis, Archdeacon of Kavirondo, has been appointed Bishop of Uganda in succession to Bishop 'J'uckor, who resigned last • year, Iho Archdeacon is a young man, and has worked in Uganda since ISOO, when ho went out as a member of the C.M.S. staff to Mengo. He took his degree at Pembroke College, Cambridge, in ISM, and was ordained deacon in 1805, and priest in the following year. Before volunteerins for missionary service ho worked lor live years (1895-19 : J0) as curate at Great Yarmouth. As a missionary he has held a number of important posts in the diocese of Uganda, chielly in tho cittern portion, and was appointed Archdeacon of Kavirondo by Bishop Tucker in lM!). Tho Hew John Wnkehold Willmk, Vicar of Yarmouth and Honorary Canon of Norwich, has accepted tho position ot Hector of Birmingham, vacant by the appointment of Canon Denton Thompson to the Bishopric of Sodor and Man. Canon Willink is an able and olounent preacher, a man of wide sympathies, and a. good organiser—as was especially shown in connection with tho Church Congress held at Yarmouth in 1907. He. has had control not only of tho parish church, which is as largo as some of our smaller Cathedrals—it is, indeed, the largest parish church in England after St. Michaels, Coventry—lint also six daughter churches and two Mission-halls, besides various chaplaincies and lay agencies. Ho has undertaken many largo schemes, and seen three new churches spring up. All kinds of work appeal to him, am! especially work among men and children. Every Yarmouth church has its flourishing Mens Socictv, and thousands of children attend their Sunday School*. Canon Willink has been a zealous educationist. Ho was educated at Clifton College, and graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge (Third Class Theological Tripos). In ISB2 ho took the Winchester Heading Prize. He was trained under Bishop Lightfoot. of Durham, who in 18S1 gave him his first curacy at Bishop Auckland, and in ISSS the Vicarogo of St.. John's, .Sunderland, which ho held till 1591, when ha became Vicar of St. Helen's, where he remained thirteen years. He was inducted into the living of Yarmouth in February, 1304. The Her. Herbert Burrows Southwell, Principal of Bishop Jacob . Hostel and Canon of Newcastle Cathedral, has been appointed to tho Canoury of Woree.-ter Cathedral, vacated by the death of ('anon Teignmouth Shore. Canon Southwell was educated at the Charterhouse, mid proceeded to Pembroke College, Oxford, where he gained a Second Class in Moderations in 187r and a Second Class Lit. Hum. in 1870. He graduated in IESO (Second (Uass in "the Theological School), and in tho following year he was Denver and Johnson Theological Scholar. He was ordained in 1831 to tho curacy of St. Mary tho Virgin, Oxford, but in the same year became Domestic Chaplain to Bishon Lightfoot, of Durham. From ISSj to 130) he was Principal of Lichfield Theological College, and in tho latter year he accepted the invitation of.the present Bishop of St. Albans to become Principal of the Bishop Jacob Hostel at Nowcastio-on-Tyne, with a, Canonry in the Cathedral.

The Bishop of Carlisle has collated, and tlio Dean ol Carlislo installed, t.ho Von. Herbert Ernest Campbell, late Vicar of St. George's Barrow, and Archdoaron of Fumes*, to J:ho Canonry in Carlislo Cathedral, vacant by the'death, of,. Canon Bower.
