TERRORS OF THE JUNGLE.
INDIA'S DEATH-ROLL. Particulars given in tho latest statistical abstract for India show that in ten vears no fewer that 213.GG3 persons have been killed by wild beasts or snakes in that country. For this terrible toll of human lives snake-bites were mainly responsible, ; tho total number of victims being 219.249. Tigers accounted for 8894 persons, and leopards for 4355. In the same period 908,329 cattle were killed, chiefly by leopards and tigers. In the subjoined table are- set out the details for 1909—tho latest period for which figures are available—together with the milliters of wild beasts and snakes destroyed in that year:— Killed by— Persons. Ilvenas — - 3,552 Other wild animals SB2 3,725 Snakes 21,364 10.G42 Totals 23.5G0 104,849 17,356 wild boasts and 88,272 snakes were destroyed. In 1909 there wore 190,871 license's to destroy wild animals in force under the Indian Arms Act.
