"A ROAR FOR RETRENCHMENT."
Sir,—Whatever elso ono may think of Mr. Atmore's politics,' the majority of persons in the colony, will, I think, agreo in his strictures on the enormous payments made by tlio Ward Government to a certain high-placed official. It is one of the ironies of politics to recall that the gentleman in question, then in Opposition, was tho originator of the famous phraso which appears at the head of this letter. There was, ho said, in tho House, "a perfect roar throughout the country for retrenchment." This was the "roar" which heralded' the ton per cent reduction and other economies of tho Atkinson Administration. Tho gentloman in question has travelled a long way since thoso days and retrenchment no longor commends itself. Is it, not high time for another roar?—l am, etc., ONE WHO liEMEMBERS.
