Speaking in regard to labour unrest a# tho Chamber of Commerce dinner to-day, Mr. Parr (Mayor of Auckland) said he was at one with those who expressed the hope that the arbitration system would 6titl rule in tho laud. It was admitted that tho Act had its defects, but surely it was not beyond the moans of men to remedy them. A Royal Commission might throw some light on tho question, but ho thought the arbitration system must b« stoutly defended and valiantly upheld. AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Auckland, February 29. At tho annual meeting of tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Mr. G. Elliot wruj elected president for tho ensuing yearand Mr, S. J. Nathan vicc-president. DROWNED. Gisborne, February 29. The police have received word that John Gavin was drowned in the Nuhaka River on Friday, and that the body was recovered to-day about midday. To-day the body of an unknown man was discovered in the Vi'niroa River. ORPHANAGE OPENED. Christchurch, February 29. This afternoon tho Presbyterian Or. plumage was opened at Fapnnui by th# Moderator (the Rev. Geo. ■ Lindsay, of Dunedin). Addresses were also given by the Rev. J. Mackenzie, by the Mayor (Mr. J. J. SHOT THROUGH THE HEART. Christchurch, February 29. At the inquest on Arthur Hill Fletcher. who was found last night dead, Miot through the heart, tho evidence went to show that deceased worried übout his wife, from whom he was separated by a decree nisi last November, and also suffered from iusomuia, due to a birth mark on his head. So fnr as witnesses knew, deceased was not troubled financially. A verdict was returned that deceased committed suicide whilst temporarily insane. ' IS HE ELIGIBLE? Blenheim, February 29. A case of considerable interest wal heard to-day in the Magistrate s Court. The case was one in which Councillor Parker obtained possession of 0.32 perches of land in Collie's Hollow, in exchange for land taken by tho council for widening High Street. The summons was issued on tho affidavit of Councillor Corry, who claimed that Parker, being concerned m tho purchase of tho land from tho council for .£IOO under the Municipal Corporations Act, is ineligible to sit as a counCou'heel for Parker objected to tho short notice of tho summons, nnd tho Magistrate agreed to adjourn the case till Thursday. FURNITURE MEN. Dunedin, February 29. The furniture trades congress decided that it is advisable to appoint an oreuniser or organisers to work with afnliatcd unions in organising tho unorganised districts; that J325 be granted by each union for the purpose, subject to the approval of the federation executive. It was further resolved that no agent should 1* permitted to represent any party to a dispute before the Conciliation Council.
