TRENTHAM--1912.

SECOND DAY. MORE COMPETITORS ARRIVEC.A.C. CUP. KARORI WINS IT OUTRIGHTTROUBLE BREWING. A beautiful day and the arrival of mure competitors on the range were two factors which had a cheering effect upon the spirits, of the shooting men at Trentliain yesterday, the second day of the New Zealand Hille Championship Meeting. The C.A.C. Cup. The only event of importance was the field firing competition for the Colonial Ammunition Company's silver cup and j;ll in prize-money. Only twu trams entered, the contest being an exciting duel between the Kuniri and Opaki Club learns. The Karcii'i nun ivun the match with two points to spare, ami this being their third win become the possessors of the trophy for all time. The conditions of the match were oil the lines of those in active service, the teams opening fire at sectional figure targets nt 800 yards range, advancing by stages to .500 yards range, and then retiring to the original position. A sectional field firing disappearing target, ground coloured, and containing three life-si; , .? figures, was allotted to each team, the target appearing 10 times during the. advance and retirement. Whenever the respective targets appeared, each team blazed away, until, in the end, 120 rounds each had been fired. Most of the bullets tore through the targets— Cft. by (ifl.—but only 1!) of the winning team's shots found the figures in the target, while the Opaki ten 111 registered 17 hits. The result was considered lo be very good indeed, and a highly satisfactory test of the efficiency of each team in the ability to concentrate on a given area Hi? collective bullets of the twelve men. In connection with the -Karori Club's win it is rather interesting lo note that every member of the team has on the average' about 8} years' service in the old volunteer force to his credit. Tha result of the match was immediately telegraphed to Auckhnd, and (luring the afternoon, the club president (Kifleuiaii 11. Marshall) received a telegram from Mr. Cecil A. Whitney, manager of the C.A.C. Company, heartily . congratulating the club on "winning the trophy outright.

The personnsl of the competing teams was as follows:— ,

Karori-Kiflenien 11. Marshall (club president), .ludd, I'ellows, Croxton, Hulford, Wickens, Chernside, Alpin, Plimmcr, Browne, Aston, Caldwell, ami lingo. Oniki—Kiflemon 11. K. King fcuptain), Hiiuny, Mawley, Jones, Hyde, lioUun, U. J. King, I.ewiii, Murray M'lutosh, Hodges, Swaiislon, and Feast. To maintain the interest of the competitors and afford opportunity for further practice, five 'extra matches—sweepstake .events—were iired, and (he (|uality of the shooting generally may be gauged from appended results.

Defects in the Programme. Th.i priiieipu! fopic of ennvei'.-ation <in the range is.still the dopressinj; slump in the lHiiii.boi- of entries. ■ Keelnij; is grnwinj; stronger on the subject of ainciidiuK the constitution of (he D.K.A. in the direction of alTiinlinj? larger represenfaliaii- cm (he Kwuliye to the eompetitnis. It is jiointed out (hat the oflicial •jiroKranime fur this year's mceiing, circulated Iliroe mnntlis a';a. can tains defects which could not have, escaped the observation of practical shnoliii!, , men had they been consulted, hi the rapid tire individual service nial.'h, it is laid down in the conditions that ii mini must get his ten shots iiv.'n.v in 30 seconds. "That i> a perfectly ridiculous and impossible! ebullition," said an experienced 'shooting man yesterday. "Yon can lire your ten, shots in that time, if you are ec|iiipp«lWith a eharger-lnading rifle. But we haven't s;ot these rifles out here yet, n.i anybody connected with shooting will tell you. In spite of that, the committee calmly lifts the. conditions for the match nut of the rules for the British Army liiHc meetings, where the charger-loader is in use, iii'id makes onr own programme the la ugh inn-stock of the shooting men all over the country. Now they have to double the time-limit! "Again," he went on, "the system of computing the points in the service aggregate is altogether wrong. One of the service matches whirh count for the aggregate is .'tliei'unniiig man'—the most'difficult event in thtr'scrvice series. A man only gets one., point for a hit in that irateh. But in an easier match.he may score live points-for a hit. That is not fair to the inun who does well at the "niniiiiis man.' These anomalies could not: exist if practical shooting men had a say in the drafting of the programme. Trouble is brewing here, and the shooting men are determined to get a hearing."

The Executive Meets. A meeting of the Executive Committee was held last evening, hut no information about the proceedings was available. Jt is understood, however, thai the main question to be decided.was in reference to the prize money. The paucity of the entries was raised, anil; the very important question of reducing the amount of the prizes, hut whether ithe association will really do this will nol be known till Colonel Collins addresses Ihe men this morning. The entrance fees to the various matches constitute a substantial quota of the prize ■funds of the association, and the paying out of (lie prizes, as per programme, would, il is stated, involve a deficit. Some of Ihe men hold the opinion that the splendid entries received at the three previous champion-hip meetings should have resulted in a credit balance suflic-isnt to Ihe association against such a slum]) a - the present, but against this has la be -et Hie fact (hat extra prize money has heen added t« tile very literal list pr.ivided in the programme in these "fat" vears, ,-u tint it i- a question whether the association is now in a position to pay (lie full prize money tlii- year without an appeal'to the Government. Visitors to the Camp. Yesterday morning. Colonel J. R. I'urdy i Director of Medical Service.-), visited the range and inspected the arrangements for the sanititi m of Ihe camp. He found everything satisfactory. Colonel A. \V. liobin, C.H. (Adjutant-General), and Lieutenant-!'olonel H. (). Knox (Quarter-master-General), will visit tlio range to(iny. When tiring commences this morning there will be 327 competitors on the range. I'ive service matches will bo fired, and it will he « strenuous day 011 the range. EXTRA MATCH. NO. 5.
