An instructive lecture was delivered last night by (he Kcw Joshua Jones on "The Period of the (",'oiuicils." befure the Seamen's Guild branch iif the C.E.M.S., lit the Missions to Seamen Institute. Jlr. •T. S. Cummings, assistant inissioner, occupied the chair. The sneaker said (lie four great Church Councils assembled re. spectively at A'ice, Constantinople, llphesus. and Chalcodon, condemned the four heresies, the Arian, the Amdlinarian, the Neslo'riaii, and the Eiitycliiaii. The first heresy aimed at the Deity of Christ, the second at Mis manhood, the third, rendering asunder His nature, the fourth confounding Ills iisr™n. The four councils settled these controversies and established that Chris!- was truly God, perfectly man; indivisibly God-man, distinctly God and man. On those decisions was built the Nicenc creed. Thus the doctrine of the Trinity was.established, and the Church defended from heresy the incarnation of her Lord. A hearty vile of thanks was proposed by Mr. K. Tj. Hurgess. This was seconded by. Mr. Simmons and carried by acclamation.
