BRISBANE STRIKE.
"AN HONOURABLE RETREAT." MR. COYNE SAYS END IS NOW IN SIGHT. By Teleeraph-Prcss Aisodatlon-OopyriEhl (lice. February 28, 10.25 p.m.) Brisbane, February 28. Mr. Coyne, chairman of Hie Strike. Committee, in addressing the strikers, declared flint the tramwaymen's battle was iron, and it only i-t-muined now to see that an honourable retreat was made. If the employers were prepared to deal with them oil the lines of an honourable, settlement, tho Strike Committee were prepared to meet them. He would probably bo able to mute n statement to-morrow.
BACK TO WORK. . Brisbane, February 28. Meetings of tho Bricklayers', Boot Operatives', Builders' ■Labourers', and Plasterers' Unions decided, by secret ballot, to return to work immediately. A deputation of plumbers and carpenters waited on Mr. Barnes, Minister for Public Works, and asked to be reinstated. Mr. Barnes said they would be taken bock on the distinct understanding that their first duty was to tho Government, not to an outside organisation.
COMMENT ON TEE JUDGMENT. Sydney, February 28. The "Herald," discussing Mr. Justice Higgins's decision, says:—"lt is no doubt true that there, is no common law enabling an employer to tell an employco what to wear, but a badge as an addition to a uniform amounts to the same thing as going to work without a coat." Tho "Daily Telegraph" says:—"While an employee is wise to be chaiy about rushing to conclusions on Mr. Justice Higgins's dictum about clothes, an obvious fact is that it is not a watchcliain ornament that is objected to, but what a particular ominous ornament stood for." Referring to a statement regarding unionism in its more recent form, tho "Telegraph" -remarks:—"Amalgamated unionism is unfortunately, in most cases spoiling for a fight with non-unionist? find the community, and that the Brisbane budge symbolised that form has teen amply proved by events."
APPEAL' TO BE LODGED. (Rec. February 28 9.15 p.m.) Adelaide, February 28. The Tramway Trust intends to appeal to the High Court against Jfr. Justice Higgins's decision in the Federal Arbitration Court in tho tramway badges case.
STEAHERS HELD UP. (Rec. February 29, 0.5 a.m.) Sydney, February 28. Owing to the wharf labourers holding up the steamer Arawattn, that vessel has been withdrawn from the trade and her crew paid oft'. The men have also held up the steamers Jlourilyan and Wollowra which they alleged are carrying non-union Queensland cargo.
