OVERSELLING
"A GLOOM OVER THE AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE." [Bj Tolcffranli.-Prosi ABSOcliitloa.l Auckland, February :!8. At tho Supremo Court to-day, during the hearing of a charge of rash speculation against James Scott Lennox, Mr. Selwyn Mays (who appeared as Crown Prosecutor) referred to the question of "'overselling." Mr. Mays said it. had become absolutely notorious, and at the present time tho Auckland Stock Exchange simply rooked in the nostrils of honest men of the community, many of whom had spoken lo him about it. Since prisoner's bankruptcy there, had been another serious wave" of over-selling on the Auckland Stock Exchange. One man had gone out for so doing, and another sound man, had been submerged, but had now got his head above w.itor. While, the punishment of the prisoner might do some good, and in some degree restore confidence, there wan undoubtedly a gloom over tho Auckland Stock Kxcliangc at the present time, tmd until (he over-selling practice was stopped it would not bo overcome. Honest brokers felt that there should be some pronouncement of legislation to riwir tho ntnioephere.
