THE CLASH AT WANGANUI
MAYOR ANJ) ENGINEER. (Ey Tdceraph.—Special Correspondent.! Wanganui, February 28. The difficulty that arose over the Borough Engineer and led to the resignation oi Mr. C. E. Maokay from the Mayoral chair is apparently not likely to b« settled yet awhile. _ At last night's meeting of the council, Councillor Holloway moved: "That a committee, consisting of the Mayor (Mr. Lifliton), Councillor HoUnson, and the mover, bo appointed to formulate the council's complaints against the Engineer; (hut these Iμ communicated by the town clerk to the engineer; that the engineer be aslted to reply thereto in writing, not later than seven days from receipt thereof, and that the council consider his reply at (he next ordinary mooting." Tho Mayor and Councillor Burgess objected to the. motion boiiis put, as the seven days' notico (proscribed in the standing orders of the council) had not been complied with, and the motion was ruled out of order by the Mayor. At a Inter stage of the mooting the same noliee of -motion was put in with a view to having it discussed at the next meeting of the council. I'll reference lo this trouble, Mr. MncJtiiy, in a letter published in the "Herald,', gives an emphatic denial to statements which have been made to the efl'oct that lie had prevented tho engineer being given a chance to be heard in hi.s own defence. Ho also states that ho has definite charges to make against the engineer, and will take an early opportunity of Anting them.
