HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Hntt Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Stevenson, Roots, Clendon, Kempthorne, Hawthorn, Hodgins, and Knight. The Firo Brigado acknowledged receiving an appliance which had been forwarded by the council, and naked to be supplied with specifications of the new reel.—Referred to the engineer. Sir. Shearer called attention to the condition of the footpaths and streets in'the Fitzhcrbert Estate.—Referred to tho engineer. • In regard to the dedication of the Rata Street extension by Slessrs. Baker Bros., Councillor Ball moved that no responsibility be taken in the matter of a publio road inside tho river stop-bank. Tho Wellington Rugby Union asked the council to reconsider the proposed terms in regard to the Recreation Ground. It ■was resolved that the previous , decision be adhered to. . Sir. W. Speers made application for a hawker's license under tho new by-law relating to-ice cream.—Granted subject to council reserving the right to appoint tho applicant a special stand. Captain Ross was granted a renewal of license for the Hutt Drill Hall. Tho Rev. J.' Jones reported that tho alteration required by tho engineer to enable a license to be granted to St. James's Church had leeti ' carried out.—License granted. ' ..; ' Two firemen wero recompensed for time occupied in watching buildings after fires had been extinguished. It was. however, resolved that application should bo mr-de to the Fire Underwriters' Association with a view oJ-ascertaining if the amount could be recovered. . A driver's application was (in view of polico report). refused. Messrs. Ellison r.ud Stanley wrote stating that the 43 acres of land and quarry previously offered to the council for <£1700 wore now available for .£750. It was resolved to leave tho matter of reporting on the advisability of purchase in the hands of Councillors Hawthorn and Hobbs and the engineer. The engineer's report on current works was submitted. Councillor Clendon moved:—"That this council favours Saturday being fixed as the day on which the weekly half-holiday should bo observed, and agrees to talco steps to have a poll taken (provided tho Petone Borough and Wellington City Councils will also do the same), with a view to making Saturday the universal day throughout the Wellington district.' Tlie mover said that he was greatly in favour of a ''universal" half-day. Tho mid-week half-day was not satisfactory. He desired (if tho motion * were carried) that a copy of it should be forwarded to the Wellington City Council and to tho councils of adjacent, boroughs. _ Councillor Kempthorne thought that tho matter should be hold over pending Wellington's deeisioji. Councillor Ball seconded tho motion. Tho motion was lost on the casting vote of tho Slayor. •
