(Dy Tclegraph.-Spccial Correspondent.) Wanganui, February 26. At. to-niorrow night's meeting of the Borough Council, Councillor Ifolloway is to . move, "That u committee, consisting of Councillors Liffiton, Robinson, and the mover be appointed to formulate (he council's complaints against the engineer; that these be communicated by the Town Clerk to tho engineer; that the engineer be asked to reply thereto in writing not later than seven days from receipt thereof; and that tho council consider his reply at tho next ordinary meeting." A man named Joseph Alooj'c was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-day wil'li the theft of a J!5 note and a watch and chain, the property of John Shelley, boardinghouse-keeprr. The evidenco lor the prosecution was to the effect (hat defendant boarded with Shelley until February 15. On that evening he (Shelley) and a couple of others played two shilling draw poker in the sitting-room, and had several whiskies during the piny. In the course of the game, Shelley produced a .£'s note, which he put back in his waistcoat pocket. Later on in the night he went to sleep on'the sofa, and in tho morning discovered 'tlint the .£5 note and a gold watch and chain he had been wearing had -disappeared. The defendant, who reserved, his defence, was '.Committed for trial. The weather lias been delightfully fine to-day, fiuito summer-like. In fact, given a continuance of this weather, the Wanganui Cup meeting, to be held on Thursday and Saturday, promises to attract a big crowd of visitors. Tho Williganui Union Boat Club lias entered crews for practically every event at the Napier Regatta at Kaster. An exciting capture jvas made on the river yesterday by Detcctive-Sergeant Siddells and Constable Connor. Two young men, named J. ■ Lee and' Edward Sutherland (a half-caste) had embarked on a punt to make their way down the? river. All went well until Matahiwi was reached, where they were met _by the police party, who, acting on the iniormation received, had procured a launch and gone up. the liver. Lee and Sutherland, as 'oon as they ascertained the identity of the launch's passengers, dived into the river, and the police had on exciting time before finally "landing" their quarry. The difficulty of tho task —the adventure took place in the centre, of a rapid—was considerably lessened hy the prompt action of Mr. E. Tait, the man in charge of the launch, who boarded the abandoned punt, and went in chase of the swimniers. Tbo luen appeared at the Court-, to-day, aud were formally charged with breaking aud enterine tho residence of Jlr. Coombcs, at Te Kora, and stealing therefrom a razor, valued at 55., and ss. Gd. in money. They were remanded to appear at Taumarunui on March 5.
