The latter, who had an apprentice allowance, was made a warm liivotmtc but ho never looked like μ-iihiiiir. -Uijmlito carried 111b. nvor to smire the -eyvices of the crack Xorlh Nliind jockey, Gray, and this proved good pulu-y, inr llw'lupin ?e)'l i!, ?, wils hrSl away ami, never being' Weil, wm , «»«tor «ily. Ho was probably never ridden a better race, for Civay nursed him nice y, and was never morn than nboiif <«"« 'fife'"'* '" front of the field. M the finish he was .roii?" finite as well as iiny, bill Kostroma, n-lioVas badly placed in the early stages. Unpon apiwared to have a elianee at the straight entrance, but died away in the run home. The wliole of the eight acceptors went to the post for U\e Watruißtmi llandu-iip, I'ecrle.s, with Gray in the saddle, beinj a slightly belter fnvnmito l-liim Hciizoncn. (lie scuoval verdict boins "the hordes neck, and the jockey s head " Peerless would probably have won by a 'larger margin had not lieuzoweu run very wide in the straifflil, iml carried the* winner out with him. None of the other candidates were near enough to par* tie.ipate in the bumping that look place, Tho stewards called Waddoll, rider nt Benr.owen, before them, and, after hearing his explanation, cautioned him. Eleven runners contested the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, for which Ode-.sa was made a slifrhfly better favoiinlo than The Cornet, with I'arablo also well backed. The public, however, were all astray, for Routine, who was the absolute outsider of the field, jumped away from tho barrier smartly, and, after racing behind the Ica.-lars until tho home turn, ciiino thi-miffh, and iron cnsil.v. In the .South Island tliis season Routine has won w number cf races, these. lndudiiiK the Ihr handicap at the last Winjrahii raochiif,'. Ko little, however, was thoughl of her on Wednesday last that, when she was submitted to"auction along; with Windward aiid Adage, mly a solitary bid ot 50 guineas was forthcoming-, nn.i she was pawed in. It is stated that she could have been hnnght for 100 guineas this morning, with all engagements in, but no business resulted. She. earned filb. over in the Jockey Club Handicap, and won easily, but was very sore as she. Lett tho course utter the event. Odessa cut one of his feet rather badlv on Thursday, and this accounted for Ins poor showing in to-day's race. The Cornet filled third place for the third successive time. Outlan'ler ami Parable were racing last a mile from home, and the former did well to gain second place. Lonrdes and Kgatapa were bracketed in the Hopeful -Handicap, and, as the other two candidates were not considered to have chances, investments were small. Ngatnpa won from end to cud, and supporters of the bracket received a really good dividend. Kimon.i was made a big favourite in the Abbotsford Welter Handicap, and carvied more than twice as much money as any other candidate. The Conqueror colt, however, suffered defeat at the hands of Waikaraka,'who fought out the finish in a manner that' would have surprised many oi those who have seen the Wniutu gelding race in the North Island. Kimona's supporters were fortunate to receive a second dividend, for Merry Las?, who finished up third, was disappointed when endoavouring to get through an opening, after the horses had entered the straight. The totnlisator money was impounded during an inquiry as to whether Waildell, rider of Waikaraka, was entitled to an apprentice's allowance, but it was eventually decided to pay out on tho horses as placed by the judge. ,1. Beale, rider of Obelus, was suspended for three months for interference with Directoire. Beale had then weighed out to ride Miss De.Vero in the next race, but had to give way to Stratford. Safety Pin and Taft were tho popular selections fur the Waibola Handicap, and tho former looked a likely winner at the home bend, but Buff Gauntlet held him safe in the run home. Buff Gauntlet has been one of the most consistent performers at the fixture. He was rather nnlucky to miss a second place on the opening day, but won on the second and third days. In the Wingatui Handicap, Effort received solfd SiHp'ifert: tflvilo-Another T'.W.ellington horse. Tufna, was a good second favourite. Jlanv held the opinion that as Turrni ha.-l.'rW'AfcffTS sobKfft-OTor seven furlongs.in,the Suburban Welter Handicap on Thursday, ho would be hard to beat over the shorter course to-day, with Ulb. iess to carry, while he could be. relied on to shape better than Effort in the heavy going. This view proved found, for Turna woii, and Effort had again tb be content with second nhce.
