AFTER THE STRIKE.
BACK TO WORK AGAIN
The Ngahauranga and Petone meat works were opened up for business yesterday, and some 800 men , had their first opportunity in two weeks to earn a little money. . It has already been indicated that from tho men's point of view the strike has -scarcely been worth while. The bulk of the hands were paid at Is. per hour before it occurred, and the companies offered to gTant Is. 3d. per hour. The men struck for other claims which they had made, but these they dropped one by one, and in the end they accepted tho offer of Is. 3d. per hour, which the companies had previously made. So that they have lost two week's' pay, and gained nothing which would not have been given them, freely. For most of them the gain amounts on a ■IS hours' week to 2s. per week. T/iero is also a little clause at the end of tho agreement which states: "This 'agreement shall not apply to permanent hands employed from year to year." The companies" have contrived to protect their permanent men, and have made provision against their being forced into tho union-.
