A. MANOY & SONS, LTD.
MOTUEKA EMPORIUM. The business of Messrs. A. Jlnnoy end Sons, Ltd., merchants, Motuoka, is me of the largest of its kind in the Nelson province. Jt embraces drapery, lurniture, and general merchandise, wine and spirits, and uiitter and flour manufactories 'the firm al-o deals largely as an exporter of Imp-, wool, and all kinds of produce. Xhe principals are .Messrs. A. .Miinoy,' sen. (the loundcr of the firm) and his three sons, Messrs. Albert 1, Henry, and Lionel Manny. It is about thirty years since •Mr. A. Manoy started the business, which even then was very boon placed on a most substantial basis by the founder. It may be mentioned that in addition to showing considerable enterprise in his own business, Mr. Manoy, sen., took a. very active part, in directing the fortunes of Motuoka to their present slate of advanced prosperity, and that at a time when the services of nn optimistic and keen-headed business man were of great value. The, several department's of tho firm are all run on separate lines, with separate establishments, and managed with every care. In referring to tho firm's very extensive business connection, it might be mentioned that their Hour mills (with their well-known "Knpai" brand) aro tho only ones of their kind in the district, l'lio mill itself is fitted with the most modem machinery, including ft suction gas plant, and as an evidence of tho quality of tho article turned out by them it is interesting to noto that the demand by the public excoeds the supply. Hour is shipped to all parts of the province, and the output is undoubtedly very large. A large wood and coal business is carried on on the premises adjoining tlioso occupied by tho Dour mills.
DAIRY INDUSTRY. Another important feature of the business is its butter manufactory, tho Kiwaka factory being 6it-.iated in the town of that name, about four miles from Motueka. The factory was established by the firm at a considerable cost about sixtoon or seventeen years ago, and when tho possibilities of tho industry were almost unforeseen. An up-to-dato factory was erected, and business was commenced with a. very few suppliers. As is easily understood, with a new industry the fight for a time was uphill, but the factory is now on a satisfactory basis. Tho farmers generally work very hard, and they undoubtedly recognised the fact that iit such a prolific district as l'iwaka dairying is likely to become a very remunerative industry. In proof of (his fact, and showing that the suppliers are- interesting themselves in the latest methods of milk production, it is.of further interest to note that milking machines are now being generally introduced into the district. The "Kiwaka" brand has gained first grade right through the season—a tribute both to the maker and tho suppliers themselves. The faclory is beautifully situated on a line eminence. The merchandise and general (b'npery business of the concern-is controlled oil very comprehensive lines, and no effort is spared to make a success of every detail. It is generally admitted chat altogether the business is one of the features of commercial success in the Nelson province.
