MR. BIDWILL'S SHEEP.
AX EAELY CONSIGNMENT. The Posthumous (nine days from Sydney), with, 1(>I)0 sheep intended for Port Nicholson, arrived in Nelson on March 5, 18-13. J.t is interesting to note I hat the greater portion of her cargo was the property of Jlr. BidwlU (brother of the author of the. (hen well-known lwok on Nov Zealand), who win; afterwards one of the first of the Wairarapa pioneers. The Nelson "Examiner," referring to the fact, stated that it believed that Mr. Bidwill intended h settle in the Wellington district and inipirt largely from New South Wales. "The suitableness of this district," saya tho paper, "will doubtless, when more generally known, induce th? breeders of stock in New South Wales to send !:ome of their flocks to depasture in (lie neighbourhood. A portion of tho cargo was"offered for sale on March. 8, but, a short notice only having been given, our country friends did not reach town til! the sale had closed, which in consequence was not so brisk as could have been desired. Another check to Hie sale was caused by the sheep having been landed on Fifeshirn Island, where, being without fresh water, they drank salt, and as might have been expected died in largo numbers. This naturally alarmed those who intended to buy, and the sale was consequently dull. The prices realised were from las. to 17s. each."
