TERRITORIAL FORCE METHODS.
Sir,-My eldest son was one of those who were fined in connection refusing to serve as a . conscript, ■ although some days.prior to court proceedings Tya obtained and printed a doctor s c«rhficate, certifying to the fact that he suffered from varicocele. On February 2 my soil was told, by Adjutant-Lieutenant Richmond, that if he'wished to be exempted on physical grounds, he was to obtain a doctors certificate, and produce the ho 7th instant; such was done and_ the adjutant took a copy. He was then informed bv this officer that this matter was out 'of - his hands, and a summons had ten issued. The breach of the law, as allied in court, and for which my son was fined, stated the offence was committed on February 3. AY hat offence? On February 2 he was told to produce a doctor's certificate by the 7th j such was done, and yet he was charged wth committing an offence. Absolute rubbish! Last night my son again presented himcelf beforo Lieutenant Eichmoud, who informed him that the statement made in the press to the effect that my, son had written a certain letter "containing statements which woro given as reasons for bis not attending drill, and these statements were not true." These words in invortvd commas taken from your report on the ease, February 13, were, he •aid. absolutely untrue. He never made such a. statement, and the reporter had made a mistake. How comes it then, that the report in the Evening I'o't'-*. also made it to appear that Lientenant. Richmond did make that statelier last night's' interview with (ho adjutant, the position is that my son has to undergo another cxMnm*lion at the hands' of the Staff Doctor, inil pending such examination, is exempted, on the adjutant's word of mouth, until further notice. Lieutenant Richmond was informed by my son Hint lie wished a private interview with General Oodlcy, in order that certain facts might be placed before the rommnndaiit, to which the adjutant replied: "General Godley would refuse to see yon. Can this mliulnnt .-peak for Ihe General? T wish to draw the attention of the Defence Minister to this case, as 1 am not one of these who will allow anv of mv offspring to be persecuted and have mil rue statements' hurled broadens! per medium of (he press. The statements coutaiiH'd in my son's letter were true, but po«ibly the time of the same was net palnti'jle to those enjoying the patronage of a wastrel Government. Trust-' in" that von will publish this letter by way of at least showing that'my son did r.uf. Miake anv untrue statements.—! am, ok.;, ' K. M. DKS LAXDES.
