NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Toloirraph.-SDcoial Correspondent.! Dunedin, February 22. 'Steadv rain, falling in (lie morning, interfered with the attemlnnee .at the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting. After the first half of the programme had been got through, the conditions improved, and the last four races were run in fine weather, though tho going was heavy. A feature of tho racing was the performance of Gold Bird, who won tho Hurdles with 12st. 101b. in the saddle. He was warmly applauded on returning (o tho scale. Another Wellington candidate which succeeded was Odessa, who won the Anniversary Handicap, while Effort tilled second place in the Domain Handicap. Considering the going this race was run in fast time. The. Knihvny Plato was looked upon as a good thing for Naumai, but lie was bealen : iuto third place in tho last fewstrides of the race. ' .Tack Ashore, who did not run on the dav, was as good a favourite as Gold Bird in the Hindon Hurdles,, while Hlack and Drown, who had the services of I'eltcr, also enjoyed fair support. Tho race again demonstrated what a poor lot of hurdle horses (here are in the South island for. despite the fact that he had been raised ldlb. for his first day's win, Gold Bird won I'lmilorinbly. lie was handled-in capilal style by Prilehard, who saved his run until (he last hurdle was safely negotiated, when .lack Ashore onlv remained In be beaten. Kingman broke down badly five furlongs from home. Peerless, wlm was meeting Davingdalc (hi Slli. better tonus than on Wednesday, uii- I'le popular f.iiirv in the Henley 1 Handicap, but from the start the favour-
Ic wns in trouble, and a bail run at he luiiiie bond did not improve his •bailees, tip finished out rif :i place, and .ho rnce went lo the lightly-weighted Muircock, who was not among tlu> plnci*totloij mi the opening day. Daringdalc ißfiiu ran an liono.st race, but iho big veight and the heavy going «'cre too until for him. If. Gray had (he mount on Odessa in lu» Anniversary llandicip, and backers mule lhi> llulUrnini'il lior-e favourite villi Oratav.i next in demand. 'J'he later was taken lo Hie front: in the first urlmig, liff jockey endeavouring to win "rom end to end, but Kills kept racing villi the Kilcheriin filly for the first six 'iirlongs, and when (lie final pinch 51818, she was unable to stall off a determined challenge from OdeSKi. Tlie .'ornet, who was the last to leave the nark, finished strongly, but, eould get no jloser than third. Soldier's' Chorus was 'ourth, Kilts fifth, and Countermine last. Mossa was the Ihird winner at tho neeting from C. Prilchanl's 1-1 utt stable. In a field of live, Naumai wns mnde ;i iery warm favourite in the Kailway Plate, tvlnlo Gold S-.iil, who had shown plenty of pace in the Publicans' Handicap on Wednesday, carried most; money of the others. Loonies, an Austrnliiiii-brod iilly, was will supported on tho inside machine, but with file occupants of the lege) she was the rank outsider of the field. Nniimni began ivith his usual brilliancy, but ho wns novo 1 jble to establish a big lead from Oohl iJail and Lourdos, and, though ho gamely contested every inch of the finish, he had to bo content with third place behind IxHinles and Gold Sail. The distance sepwating tho three horses was a neck only. Dn good going Naumai would probably have won, but in 10-dav's race his penalty, the hill, and tho heavy going were ill against him. Buff Gauntlet, who should have filled woud plaeo behind llenzowon in tho Perivick Handicap on the first day, wag made favourite in the Outrani Handicap, and ho won vcrv easily from Pleasure Bent, who had tlw others well beaten, lnit showed a lot of pace in the early stages, but died awav in the straight, and linisliihl nearly last. .He ought, however, to do better when next he sports silk. . Effort, who was making her first appeariuice in the Domain Handicap, was backh\ as if tho race was nil over, but she ivas slow lo commence, and when hall tho listanee had been covered, she must have been fully live lengths behind Gapon and Dircctoiro. She came with a great rush over the last furlong, but though she passed Lupulilo and Directoire, she was unable lo loach Gapon. The lost-named thus atoned h.~ her defeat in tho Pubhcans' Handicap, in which he wns badly kit. Lourdcs, who had won the Railway Handicap earlier in tho day, was withdrawn from the Citv Handicap, and this lelt-jive juveniles to compete. 'Lhe Chokebcre filly, Scottish Star, was installed favourite, but she made a poor showing, and finished 11: last position. Star Dancer, who looked ,111 belter condition than any of Iht oppon ents, won easily at the finish. Ngatapaa half-brother' (by St. Ambrose) to thr Oakleigh Plate winner, Horesinn-sl^v.T ; a lot of naco in the early stages. He i< a nice coll of whom more should be hearu in the future. . , . Obolus was tho public elect 111 last race, but he failed to gain a place, Waijii winning easily from Medallist, after lislicuff had made tho early running.
