To-day the annual prize-giving was conducted at the school, the presentation of the prizes being carrijd out by the chairman of the committee (Mr. 'J. E. Ilodder). Among .the competitors at tho sports gathering of the local Amateur Athletic Club next Wednesday will bo tho wellknown athletes Hill, Dormer, and Kerr. Other competitors from Auckland and Christchurch will also lie taking part. It is understood that, the Police Department has decided to appeal against the decision of Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., on the charge of bookmaking at the Foxtou races brought against Matthew- Connolly. The ease, it may' be remembered, was dismissed. About five hundred flaxniitl hands attended the meeting to-day to consider the matter in dispute between tho union and the mill owners in respect to conditions under which the- flax-eutters and trammers worlt. Mr. It. H. Dnlhousio, president of the union, addressed tho meeting, and explained tho matters in dispute and what had led tip to the present meeting. When the meeting adjourned for lunch at 12.30 no decision had been'arrived at. On ■ reassembling afterwards, Mr. P. llalley, conciliation commissioner, wiis present. A conference with the representatives of the mill-owners is to be held at as early, a date as possible.
