A howling gale spoilt the pleasure of tho opening day of tho Woodville District Jockey Club meeting. After some delay at tho post, the fourteen maidens were well dispatched to a good start. The Hon. J. D. Ormond's Haskyne (Birkonhead—Outer), which was well supported for the race won by Stepaipy at Trcntham. led throughout and won with something to spare from tho New Plymouth-owned Master Kilcherau. 'The three l.wo-year-okls engaged in the raco finished in places in the reverse order to which their names appeared on the'caret. Lockwoixl (St. Ambrose—Wailemata) will bn heard of again when more seasoned. The winner and runner-up were best backed on tbo .machine. All the acceptors started in the Hurdles. ■Wttip'jtore was tho slightly better favourite. Nellra, the top weight, did her best, but the heavy impost and the galo blowing stopped her. Nedra had the asFistance of two others, but jumped badly, and ran down a hurdle six furlongs froin home, ■ and - extinguished .her chance. The Foxton-owned Stevens, ridden by C. Price, scored a. lucky win. Canadian stumbled at the last hurdle in the straight and Stevens, who nearly got rid of C. Price at the previous obstacle, secured the verdict. Tn liu (\V. Young) had no difficulty in getting fourth. All started for the Whnriti Hack Handicap except To Waharoa .and Otaraia. Tho Nut led to the turn where Moutoa Girl took charge. Half-way down the running she. appeared to have the race in band, but Clemoes, well handled by A. Oliver, got up in time to win by a head. Mangaroa was fourth. The winner carried a penalty for the win at New Plymouth. He is a good solid sort by fit. Clements, trained by I!. Urough at Hawcni. The ivinner was favourite. Vi was the ■only.Cup scratching. The public went, solidly for Sir Knox, who had recently won over the distance at Wairarapu. and Egmont. Golden Loop, Arioin, and Mere Mere.acted as pacemakers right into the straight. Cork and Sir Knox challenged in the straight, tho latter scoring by half a length. Ariom wa? a good third, Mere Mere and Golden Loop being next. The winner carried more than double tho money of any of the other runners. Julian' finished a bad last. Ineuru, Leapuki, Happy New Year, and Miss Roberts were scratched for the County Hack Handicap. The backers w : ould have nothing but Sir Solo (Dceley's mount) who carried more than double the money invested on any of the other Tunners. Glenfern and Thravo were prominent to the turn. Halfiway down tho running the favourite got through and scored with a little , to spare. Amber ami White, Ohinee, and Mi&ile finished close up to the placed horses. In the President's Handicap Golden Wsiter and Eclogue, on the extreme outside, were all slow to move and losE several lengths. lioyal Marine and Master Svlvia on the inside led to'tho turn where tfio former dropped back beaten. Master Sylvia led into the straight where Deeley brought Lady Moutoa (the favourite) through on the rails and scored by a length. Seaton Dale was close up. Deeley scored his third successive win in this race and was applauded on returning to tho enclosure. Tho Victoria Hack Handicap puzzled punters, six of the ten runners being backed. Although tho favourite (Merrio Emerald) ran second, five horses were better backed than the winner, a member of J. M. Cameron's Hustings team. The winner was ridden by C. Jenkins, who was cheered on returning to scale. Although he does imt salute the judge as often a<; he used to, Jenkins is still one of the mast popular jockeys riding. . The start for the concluding event, was delayed by longstep. Kangiatua, Asealon, and -Utciir wore prominent for half a mile.* The first-named, a good favourite, was beaten before Ibe straight was reached ' In the last hundred yards Siimpis shot out and won by a length from Khamsin, who paid a better price than the winner. I!. JJoeley will not be prf-cut 10-imirrow. as hn is reliving lor the South Auckland meet in;;.
