lntieipated that tlvo going would bo heav) 'or the opening day of the Dunedin J.C. uoeting, but a high vind dried tho courca lonsider.ibly, and the rain kept oil until liter the Cup race, wlipn several heavy iliowers fell. The downpour, however, lid not interfere with tho racing, and ;ood fields were the order rather than tho ixcuption. Interest centred chiefly in tho Cup race Hid the Champagne Stakes. In the latter went thn spectators saw a fine "sot to" oetween lirown Owl and Bon Ton, ami, me hundred yards from the post, it apK'iired a-s if the line liorseinanahip i>f Gray ivns going to secure victory for lion Ton, Uro'ivn Owl, however, won decisively in .lio last few strides. In the Cup, Parable, whose parly were i-ery confident, won very easily, the Wo!-\ lington representative Odessa failing to ;ain a place. Gold liird, from the samo stable us Odessa, won tho hurdles, but . J'uni.i ami Naumai scarcely ran up lo .■xpeetatious. The last-named will lw bettor suited over tho shorter, coureo toliny. Effort, who had been doing woll siiico her arrival here, was not started 3ii ac:ount of the. heavy going.. Such a poor class of horses opposed the bop weight, Gold Bird, in t)io Autumn Hurdles, that;, if tho race hnd been run in the North Island, the Hutt-traincd horso would have been remiotliing riioro than a decided favourite. However, Mcrcedo (Welbeck—Nautiloid) was a :iuiet paddock tip, and, when tho machine :losrrt, ho carried nearly as much money ns Gold Bird. None of the. otliers was accorded very much support. Mcrcedo set off at ii good pace, and, nt o»o stage, looked like maintaining the lend, but the lastltwo furlongs found a weak spot in Ills slaying powers, and ""tho favourite, whom T. Pritchard had in a nice position (he whole way, won comfortably from Pimil. Black and Brown fell after going six furlougs, and his rider received several cuts and a severe shaking. Ten candidates faced the starter in th« Gladbrook Handicap, Peerless (on whom H. Gray had tho mount) being made a pronounced favourite, llcssiono made the running until the straight, when Peerles.i was taken to the front, but. Daringilalo immediately challenged, and won by it Rood margin. Tha s winner was woll fancied by his party, but the publio generally were not attracted to him, und he was allowed lo pay a false price. As was generally anticipated, the presence of Brown Owl in the Chnmpagwt Stakes had the effect of reducing tho field, mid, when (ho scrachings were announced, Bon Ton ond May Dalrymnlo were the only candidates left to oppose the Trcndmilr filly. Bun Tou moved nttractivoly in his preliminary, and, as he had the services of H. Gray, there was plenty of support forthcoming for him, but Brown Owl nevertheless finished up a strong favourite. Tho V-lirec starters stood on the mark together, but Brown Owl was the slowest to move, and, at Hie end of a furlong, Boil Ton w,i» lending from May Dalrymple, nnd must hnvn been fully three, lengths ahead of tho favourite. The lali:«r, however, soon passed May Dalrympl?, and, two furlongs from home, was alongside Bon Ton, who seemed to bo going well. Gray brought Bon Ton round the turn smartly, and drew away from tho favourite again, and, ns Jones drew tho whip, it almost looked as if Bon Ton must win. Brown Owl, however, responded in the gnmest fashion, nnd drew level ajrain about 30 yards from the post. Bon Ton was unable to do nny better when thn stick was requisitioned, ind the favourite passed .the post fully a length to the good, after a most exciting finish. St. A.idan, who had- been galloping really woll on the tracks, went wrong all the eleventh hour, and was withdrawn from tho Dunedin Cup field. The' defection of Countermine in favour of. Masterpiece left a baker's dozen to go to tho post, and Masterpiece was in ado a good favourite, with Odessa next in demand. The latter hnd been doing particularly well since his arrival at. Wingatui, and looked full of life, but good judges predicted that tho distance would prove a trifle too far for him, and so it did, for, after vnmiine up into third posihon »at the end of a mile, he died away again in the straight. Masterpiece was never prominent, and was one of tue last lo finish. Outlander and Parablo led Oio fiold tho whole way, and, when M'Combe scut Parable to (ho front two furlongs from home tho Mcrriwco inaro quickly put the issue beyond doubt. Ivon* of (ho others wcru able to roach Outlandor, though Thn Cornet itmahed strongly in third position. Soldiers Chorus was fourth, Mumura fifth, and Odessa sixth. The Apprentices' Plate resulted in a very easy victory for Windward, who returned his supporters a eerviceabl» dividend. Hβ whs submitted to auction after tho'race-, and bought in for 47 guineas. Effort was the only withdrawal from the Stewards' Welter Handicap, for which Tnrna was made a strong favourite, while Obolus carried a good deal more money than any of the other candidates. Tho favourite got away fairly well, but quickly drifted to last position, add. though ho improved slightly when half the distance had been covered, ho never looked a likely winner, and finished among the rear division. Fisticuff. and Wniju led a'bunched field into the straight, where Wnikaraka took charge ami won easily by seyoral lengths from Obolus. Waikarakli is now trained at Winton, and has been doing good work on the tracks recently. Wluui in thu Norlfi Island he.iiovor enjoyed the reputation of being reliable in a race, and this no doubt accounted for his being allowed to pay such a large dividend. The protost flag was hoisted after the. race, "as it i.i understood that notice of_ protest wae given against the winner. No protest; was actually lodged, however, ond the dividends were paid after a brief delay. Benzowen, from tho Game stable us Waikaraka, was made favourite in tho Berwick Handicap, nnd ho won comfortably. This was the third victorj for tho Southland horses during the afternoon. Eusso, who ran second to Benzowen, is a fullbrother to Kremlin, Czar Kolohol, and Kostroma, and looks capable of winning in moderate company. . Gapon was tho popular fancy in the Publican's Handicap, but Tannhauser, on whom H. Gray hnil tho mount, was nlsn well supported. Tho favourite, did not begin at all well, and failed to finish among the plnced division. Tannhnuser, on tho other hand, was one of the first to begin, and, after Naumai and Sea King had set a warm pace to the straight entrance,,, Gray brought tho Martian gelding along mi tho rails, and won nicely from Gold Sail, who was clear of the others.
