EASTBOURNE COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held at Mr.' Avery's ofiico yesterday afternoon. Tho Mayor (Mr. Shortt) presided. A deputation representing ratepayers of Eastbourne met the council, on the question of water supply for the borough.
Mr. J. B. Speed, who introduced the deputation, said that they were there to press the necessity of a water supply in the district. A petition had been got up, which contained 150 names of ratepayers, out of 500 on the roll, urging the council to introduce the Gollan's Valley scheme. Tho speaker added that there were about 100 ratepayers who were quite in sympathy with the scheme, but who had not, for some reason or other, signed the petition. The paltry amount in the matter of rates should not be considered in the question at all. The rate would amount to about Jd. in the £.. Mr. Speed went on to say that he believed that tho water supply would go a considerable way towards augmenting the population of the borough, and might thus conceivably lead to the borough ultimately having a ferry service of their own.
Tho Mayor thanked the deputation for coming forward, and said that the council would go-thoroughly into the matter. Tho deputation, after thanking the council, withdrew, and the council went into committee to discuss the matter.
