RECORD TOPPED
(From Our Special Eeporter.) Masterton, February 20. The natural beauty of the Masterton A. and P. Association's new show grounds at Solway was brought home to some hundreds of people to-day on Ike occasion of the association's annual show. Maich has been written of the newgrounds, but they have to be seen to be fully appreciated. The appointments are on the most up-to-date lines, and the surroundings are beautiful, native bush, ferns, and shrubs lending an altogether delightful touch to the intensely practical main side of the show proper. The grandstand has been built to accommodate 2000 people, and the show Hug has been constructed so that the view is perfect Iroin all points. A natural grandstand encircles the- ring The show authorities and the people of Masterton have reason to be proud of their grounds.
The entries for the show constitute a record, the total being 2102, as against 21107 last year. Details of the entries are as nuclei', the figures for the last show being given jn parentheses:—Competitions, 111! (ISO); horses, 373 (319); cattle, 254 (202); sheep, 70.5 (713); (logs, 77 (53); pigs, 10 (25); produce, 330 (270); horticulture, 147 (203).
The strongest class in stud sheep is Romneys, tne entry totalling 131. The breeders represented include Messrs. \V. 11. Buick, I'. Mungavin, A. and J. Gray, J. E. Hewitt, A. L. Wheeler, It. Tanner, Gray Bros., \V. B. Allen, G. E. Allen, W. Kavner, Holme.* Warren, W. E. Bidwill, J. M'Leod, J. 11. Tatham, G. W. Allen, and Mrs. 11. S Hadficld. fcouthdowns give a total entry of 03, tho breeders represented including .Messrs. A. J. StoncWigg, J. M'Grogor, W. U. Booth, Kelson Bros., S. I{. Lancaster, Ellis Bros., W. liayner, and Mrs. B. 11. Slack. Competition in English Leicestors is confined to Messrs. Slack Bros, and S. R. Lancaster, the total entry being 49. Both champion tickets went to the latter. Shropshires have attracted 49 entries, including sheep from the (locks of Messrs. 11. D. Vavasour, .1. C. M'Killop, W. Rayncr, and W. M'Kensiia. The Blenheim breeder carried off both championships. Lincolns are present to the number of 41 entries. Tho showing of Border-Leiccstors is small, only 12 entries being received for eight classes.
The freezing classes are, as usual, strong, no fewer than 153' entries being received from such well-known breeders as Messrs. TV. H. Beetham, YV. C. Buchanan, J. Strang, YV. Perrv, R.Buick, J. E. Perry, W. H. Bui-jk, W. H. Booth, and M'Kenzie Bros. Ten classes of fat sheep attracted 02 entries The purebred cattle section shows Jerseys and Hcrefords at the head of the entries, each having a tally of 31. E. Eagle's bull was awarded the championship in his class, and S. R. Lancaster scored in-the female section. E. Short, of Fcilding, carried off both of the Hereford championships. Shorthorn breeders responded with 31 entries, and Holsteins 'numbered 29. Mi. Lovelock added two more champion awards to his list of Holstein successes.
The Ayrshire classes only attracted 12 entries from three breeders. The dairy, fat. and grade classes wore all well filled, and the horse classes drew some really-ex-cellent animals.
