MASTERTON NOTES.

Masterton, February 19. Only three or four men in tho Wairarapa have failed to register under the Defence Act. These have been given a final reminder. In his annual report on the Masterton Hospital the Inspector-General states that he found the wards in excellent order, aad a better discipline reigning. There had been a reduction in cost of not less than .£34 per bed, the reduction being noticeable in every department. Over 240 nominations have been received for the pigeon-flying match for a lady's bracelet, to bo held on tho "People's Day" of the show. 1 Another old resident of the disfrict. \v the person of Mrs. Haftka, senr., died yesterday, at the ago of .severe-four years. The deceased, who had ejfcu ailing for eome time, leaves one son and two daughters. A very, useful provision has been mado on the Masterton Show Grounds, in the shape of indicator-boards. These, placed in various parts of the grounds, will enable the visitor to discover at a glance 1 the locality of the different exhibits and appointments. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapn. Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union was hold on Saturday last, Mr. M. Lavery occupying the chair. The Kopuaranga Sports Club complained that the Amateur Athletic Association had decided to hold a sports-meeting on Easter Monday, that day having been thsir recosuised day for the last fifteen years. The district secretary notified that he would be in Masterton on Wednesday, and would like to meet tho delegates, i Mr. M. Lavery was appointed solicitor to tho centre. It was decided to ask the Gladstone Sports Club to senrii in all entry forms to the centre forthwith, in accordance with the rules.

The new Courthouse in Masterton is noiT practically completed, and will probaßly be furnished in time for the sitting of the Supreme Court next month. There will be 16G2 sheep on exhibition at the Masterton Show this week. Of these, 932 will be in the class for "fats." There will also be 10G head of fat cattle in tho pens. Non-commissioned officers in connection with the Masterton Territorials have been selected by the staff. These will b<v permanently appointed after next month's encampment at Takapau.
