MODES OF THE MOMENT.
It is early to speak of serge, but coming events are casting shadows before, and the raven's wing serge, which seems to be the material of the hour at present in Paris and London, will soon be among us, says a writer in the "Age." Nothing could bo simpler than the make of most of these shnrt-waisted, narrow-skirted gowns, and nothing more perfect than their cut. With them the costliest and most beautiful furs are worn. Occasionally they are very richly braided, and actually trimmed with fur, but the actual lino of the gown is always of the plainest. Ratine is in gTcat demand for big culls, collars! and revers, especially in connection with grey gowns. All these fur accessories am mado detachable. Once again purple in all its varieties is to tho fore, while green and royal blue velvet havo never enjoyed such favour. Quits magnificent are the buttons used on these velvet gowns, which are usually of the waistless order. Barbaric belt's and very bold Russian embroidery will make many grey gowns things of wonderful attraction.
A typical evening gown is of gold and water-blue silk, bordered with the narrowest edging of fur. Long sailor collars, with very deep fronts, are a feature, while ecru crash, embroidered in vivid cross-stitch, ranks as one of the greatest novelties for trimming blouses.
