ITis Excellency the Governor is to open the new "Jubilee Ward" at the Home of Cnuipassion, Island Hay, at :i o'clock this afternoon. This evening he will attend the performance of "Sweet Countv Kerry" at the Opera House.
Mr. O. Good, of the i Auckland Customs Ollice, has been promoted to tho position of landing oliicer at the Wellington office. He will take up his new duties on March 1.
The Bishop of Waiapu and Mrs. Avcrill left New Zealand for a trip to England by the Morca on i'riilay. Archdeacon Williams has been appointed coinmissionary for tho diocese during the Bishop's absence.
Mr. Joseph MacMahon, of the Queen's Theatre, Auckland, is on a visit to Wellington.
Air. C. S. Nixon, Collector of Customs, is at present at Napier engaged on inspection work. From Napier he proceeds on a tour of inspection of northern offices, these including Auckland. During Mr. Nixon's two weeks' absence from Wellington, Mr. W. Dose is Acting-Col-lector of Customs here.
-Mr. Walter Coath, of the staff of tho Hank of New Zealand, who has been in charge of the K'aikoura branch for the past nine months, arrived in Wellington on Saturday morning. Mr. Coath is on holiday leave, at the conclusion of which he will uct as relieving manager at ltangiora.

After evensong at St. Mary's Clmrch, Karon, last night, the largo congregation remained after the service for the purV? Ee t°' ,'* l ' c ' n S ' 0:lvc °f the choirmaster, Air.. I. V. Waters, who has retired from Ins position after having held it for IS years. The Rev. A. L. Hansell, in making the presentation, paid a hi*jh tribute to Mr. Waters's faithful discharge of his duty—a service which the congregation could not allow to go unrecognised. The presentation to Mr. Waters comprised a revolving book-case, a number ut books, and a silver entree dish, the last-named item being meant to signify recognition of the part Mrs. Waters liad taken in her husband's work. Mr. Waters thanked the vicar and the congregation for the kindly thought which had prompted the presentation.
Tho following visitors are staving at Barrett's Hotel:—Mr. and Mrs."Fraser, Duncdln; Mr. C. Fox, Melbourne; Mr. Stanley Grant (representative Geo. Marlow Co.); Mr. Stewart, Dunedin; Mr. Menzics, Nelson; Mr. T. W. Flowers, Westport; and members of tho I'icton Bowing Club.
Miss Ethel Irving and the members of her company passed through Wellington on Saturday en route to Christchurch. The'company is to commence a brief season here on March !•• Miss Irving witnessed part of the performance of "Sweet County Kerry" at tho Opera House on Saturday evening.
At the evening son-ice of the Central Mission in the New Theatre last night, the Silver Band played the "Dead March" in ".Saul," in memory of tho late Mrs. Knoch Tonks. Suitable reference to the decease of Mrs. Tonks, whose husband is a member of the Central Mission Committee, was made by tho ltov. E. 0. Ulamiros.
