PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

0 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, February 16. • The Memawatu Philosophical Society held, its monthly meeting at the Museum last night, the president, Mr. E. Gardner, in the chair, those present including a number of ladies. Mr. n. H. Wilson gave a most interesting and instructive address on "Submarine Telegraphy," and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Jlr. I{. M'Nab had on new a number of curios, including a sla'to slab that had been found in a cavc in the South Island, having inscribed on it the names of I{. Jones, owner, and G. Downing, captain, of the Klizabeth, 1815-1835; and a coin which was found in a Maori oven in Invercargill, dated 175'J, eleven years bjfore Captain Cook's arrival. At the sports ground last evening the Manawatu Amateur Athletic Club ran off two events, 100 Yards Handicap aiul Mile Handicap. The final of the sprint was won by Palliser, 9yds. The mile was won by Stewart, with Pitt second, these being the only ones to finish.

Tho Kairanga School annual picnic was held to-day in Mr. Basil Thompson's paddock. There was a largo attendance, including a number of visitors from town. All kinds of sports were arranged for the children and a real good time was spent. At the usual meeting of Loyal Manawatu Lodge of Oddfellows, JI.TJ., last night (liro. W. C. Dudley, N.G., presiding), one new member was initiated. A vote of condolence was passed to Bros. L. and J. Wischnowski on the death of their mother.

At the Police Court to-dny, Jane Woods was brought .up on remand, chargcd with stealing goods, comprising two rugs, three silk blouses, a necktic, and a handbag, valued at .fit 2s. Gd. She was remanded.

A serious accidcnt happened in a peculiar manner to Mr. Grubbins, of Ronpotea, on Sunday last, by which he sustained a broken ieg. It appears that Mr. Grubbins was on his way to visit Mr. Bottcher, and was being closely followed by Sir. O'Ncalc's milk cart, on its return from the factory. Without any warning to the boy driving behind, he turned sharp to enter the gateway, and before O'Neale's boy could pull up ho was into the back of Gruhbins's conveyance, with the result that it was upset, and Mr. Grubbins thrown out.

Tho Palmerston Tennis tournament opened to-day in anything but pleasant weather. Several showers made til? courts on the heavy side. Players arc attending from various ports of the district.
