Recent publications of the Gazette contain the following notices to mariners:-* Tokomaru Bay.—Lights on Leading Bcacons.—Referring to notice to mariners No. 162 of 1911, the Waiapu County Council has notified that the front beacon at Tokomnru Hay now carrier a red light, and the back or higher beacon a white light. Charts, etc., affected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 2527 and 3500; "New Zealand IMlot," eighth edition, 1908, Chanter IV, page 121; "New Zealand Nauticaf Almanac," 1912, pa go . 326. • , Auckland Harbour Light.—Referring to notice, to mariners No. 143 of 1911, the Auckland Harbour Board havo further notified that an uuwatchcd -500 c.p. Lux light is now exhibited from the St. Helier's Bay Wnarf. The light will be 16ft. above n.W., and visible t,o seaward about seven miles on a clear dark night, and takes the place of the kerosene light at present exhibited from the wharf. Admiralty Publications: True Bearings Introduced.—Notice is hereby given that, on and after January 1, 1*912, true bearing will be introduced as soon as practicable in all Admiralty publications. Details of the new system arc as follow:—(a) On charts: A new pattern compass is already being gradually introduced which enables true bearings to be laid off on the chart; in addition to magnetic bearings as at present. The compass consists of two graduated circles, dearly separated from each other. The outer circle is a truo comnass, graduated from Odeg. (trus north) to 360deg., measured clockwise. The inner circle is a magnetic compass, graduated in pts. and in decrees from Odcg. to 90dqg, as heretofore. Tin bearings of leading and clearing marks, .etc., will be given both true and magnetic, and a note to this effect will be placed on the title of the charts. Example: The baring S.4Cdcj. W. true, witli a variation of 12dc"g.E., will be shownlhus: 220dcg. (S. 28deg. W. mag.). (b> In sailing directions: Bearings will he given as true only, in* degrees from Odeg. The Southern Isle has been engaged in the Auckland coastal trade for some years past, and was'built at Omaha in 1901. Tho purchasers arc Messrs. Gib- k son and Foster, of Nelson, who intend to employ her in the coal trade between Havelock and Nelson. The Southern Isle was to have left the Great Barrier on Thursday with a full cargo of pawn timber for Wellington. After discharge at Wellington, the vessel will procced to Nelson to r take up lu»r running. The Pearl Kasper is a wooden ketch of 25 tons, and was c built at Auckland in 1910, and was owned by Captain J. P. Kasper. She has been purchased by Captain U. G. Tregidge, of Nelson, and will be employed in the Nelson coal trade. Tho Pearl Kasper sails for Nelson in the courso of a few days. The New Zealand Shipping Company's oargo steamer Tongariro left Nnpier for London at 4 a.m. yesterday. It is usual for the Anchor Line's steamer Nikau to leave Wellington for Nelson * at 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
