Champion (Wait* mata), 1; R. Hcaly (Thorndon), 2; F. J, Aernott (Ponepnby), 3. Champion early got a load, which ho maintained through, out, finishing two lengths ahead of Hcaly. Acrnott (the other oompetitor) being thrca lengths behind tho winneh Champion's time was 12mm. 22 2-ssec.; Hcal/s, lWn, oo 2-sseo. j Kernotfs Hmin. 18 3-ssec. Second heat: C. Wolson (Waitomata), 1; F. beymour (Hawke's Bay), 2; C. H. H. Kich (Opawa), 3. E. J. Dawson (Dunedin) a . i.?' ' , il'Quillan (Waitemata) also started, but dropped oat in tho early stages of the race. Wei ton led practically all the way, winning by abont twenty yards, and Rich was about two longthi behind tho winner. Welson's time waa 12rain. 31 l-ssec., Seymour's 12min. 48 4-5 sec., and Rich'o 13min. 38 l-sseo. R. Newman (Dnnedin), and P. Schw*rta (Bast Christchuich) entered protests against being scratched in this eTent, alleging that they did not receive notii of the alteration of the time at which tfw heats were to be ewum. It was decided to allow the protest in Nowman's case, and he is to swim the distance (probably tomorrow). It is likely, however. that the two heats decided to-day will hare to be nv swum owing to tho failure of tho authorities to officially notify the competitors of the alteration of the time of tho raco from that first announced. The final of the half-mile championship will be ewuia to-morrow.
