BLACKBURNE'S TABLES. VALUABLE NAUTICAL PUBLICATION. In connection with his recent third edition of his publication. "Tables for Aylmuths, Great Circle Sailing and Reduction to the Meridian," Captain 11. S. Blackburns, Nautical Adviser to the New Zealand Government, has received many complimentary references, aud the work is highly spoken of by navigators. The work is published by the Marine Department. Captain Blackburiic has received a letter from Mr. 11. 1!. Hughss. navigating officer of H.M. cable steamer Iris, and as there are no other officers anywhere who make such a speciality of astronomical navigation as navigating officers of c.ihlo steamers do, tfco letter speaks for itself. Following is the letter:— Dear sir,—Many thanks for your letter of the 7th inst., also the advertisement sheets, which I shall have groat pleasure in passing on to my friends, and will strongly advlso them to procure the tables at once if they have not got them. I have tried "New Navigation" methods and all the principal tables of the d.iy during my search for the short- - est' and most accurate methods, and hava come to the conclusion that for our work your tables and system in general ore the best.—l am, dear, sir,
Yours faithfully, (Sgd.) H. ROCnFOIiD HUGHES. To Captain H. S. Blackbunic. It might be explained that the "Now Navigation" method—now no longer new— is dun to Mareg Saint-Hilaire, a distinguished officer in the French Navy. It is a. method of dealing with combined altitudes for position finding, nnd of late years it. has beon taught in the Naval Colleges at. Greenwich, Portsmouth, etc., almost to the exclusion of all other methods. Quite liitsly, three bulky volumes of tallies, costing 455., have been published by Rev. Frcdk. Ball. M.A., to further facilitate the. work by this method; but. even with the aid of these expensive tables the problem is not so easily solved (ol any rate with high altitudes) as by the method and tables used in Captain Blackbnrne's work, which only costs 6s. Captain Hlackburnc has received vjrv great assistance, in compiling these tables from Mr. Clins. Westland, who is tho owner of a sheep-run in Canterbury. Mr. Wenland is not even a- Government Servant, but, for the pure love of science, and the privilege of doing something for the benefit of seafarers and the saving of liv;s and properly, has gratuitously givp.n much of his spare time during the last five or six years to the laborious calculation of nautical tables, and Ik still nloddine away at tin , ! work. Tlio next, edition of the reduction tahles 'which it is hoped will be published within the next thre; years) will be a grater boon to navigators than anything which has been previously published. It is st-iled by those competent to pass an opinion that the most valuable addition to this ii3w edition of Blackbnrno's tables is table M on pages 150 and 151. The error of latitude to 4sec. of error in tho time is seen at a dance from the tables for any nx-meridinn observation, and the .-am? table is used for /acililnting the work of finding the latitude and longitude from a Sunnier, or double altitude observations, either from the ex-meridians or from one ex-meridian combined with a chrutiouiet..'P oussnatlou.

At noon on Monday the Chatham Islands Fishinß Company's steamer Himitaitpi is expected to leave WelHiißton for the Chathumß direct.
