At the Lower Hutt Police Court vesterday, before Messrs. Chapman and Cudby, .t.P.'s, Magnus Badger made application for n prohibition ' order against Barry Goring. Mr. Wilson appeared for ; the defendant. Evidence was Riven by the police to the effect ■ that defendant was given to drink, but was never sufficiently under its influence.. , to warrant. his, detention. The application was refused, the Bench holding that there was insufficient evidence. Solicitor's , fees were allowed. ;: ■ .
The annual meeting-"of the Petone Branch' of the St.' John Ambulance Bripdo was held last" night. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presided over a fair attendance. The certificates were presented as /follow: —First ..aid,, ladies' class—Misses May Gore, Edith Norman. Alice Bayley, Grace M'Collam, Kate Stcrnpa, .Betba Payne, Ethel Young. First. aid, men's class— Arthur-Vcritz, George M'Eweu, James Martin. Henry Brown, .Harry Devenport, James Wilson, and'"Harry: Adamson. Sec-ond-year certificate—James Ryatu Five, years' service certificate; nursing division—Mesd am es Collett, Bennett, and Corner. Ambulance division—Messrs. Cox, Steinranller, B?rd, Marsdon, and Hooper. Iu presenting ■ the ■' H&ssey Challenge Shield recently won at"'■ Ma-sterton, the Mayor congratulated the- team on its efficiency. The 'winners were • Messrs.' Smart, Steinmuller, Raistriack, and Ryan. During the evening a- musical programme was given by local performers.
